CHAPTER SIXTY–FOUR
HAILEY
I arrived at the hospital for my afternoon shift, and was not in a good mood. I was constantly checking my phone, and texting Dominic.
But, he didn’t answer any of my texts or calls.
I was beyond worried, and couldn’t concentrate.
I had been waiting for him to pick up the phone, but nothing. I knew if anything happened, he would have called or texted me. He would have reached out. But, the fact that he wasn’t answering made me nervous.
I wasn’t expecting it to be easy, and I was prepared for the worst. But, the truth was, the situation was affecting me a lot more than I had anticipated. I didn’t realize just how hard it was going to be.
The more I thought about him, the more anxious I became. My mind was playing games, and making me overthink.
Maybe Dominic didn’t like him, and was upset.
What if he was disappointed? Maybe something happened, and it was a disaster.
There was so much going on, and my thoughts were driving me crazy. I was constantly checking the clock, and kept watching the minutes go by.
Maybe I was overreacting, maybe he wasn’t picking my calls because they were having too much fun and couldn’t answer. Maybe, just maybe, he was trying to make a memory with his
son.
But, I couldn’t help myself.
Even though, he was acting normal, and was not giving away any hints, I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that he had a wife.
And the thought of her spending time with my son. I made a mental note to talk to him about that. Because there was no way I was going to allow Yasmine to meet him, not until we’ve decided that we were ready.
Dominic would have to understand, and agree.
This was a process, and we couldn’t just jump into it.

If he wanted it to work, then we would have to take things slow, and not rush into anything. I wanted her nowhere near Liam, and I wouldn’t stand for it.
“Hailey?”
I jumped, and turned around. It was Richard, my colleague and friend. For some reasons, after the last time we went to eat together on our break, he has been keeping his distance from me. Wouldn’t say more than a few words to me, or couldn’t even look me straight in the eye when talking to me.
So imagine my surprise, when he approached me.
“Hi. Everything okay?”
“Yes, of course. I wanted to inform you that the new interns have arrived, and Dr. Miller is giving them a tour. She was wondering if you can check up on them and show them around the hospital.”
I smiled. “Sure. Thanks.”
Richard nodded, and when he was about to walk away, I called him.
“Is everything okay, Richard?”
“Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t it be?”
“You’re acting strange. Scratch that, you’ve been acting strange ever since the day we went out for break. And I can’t think of anything, because we had a good time.”
“Look, Hailey. I just… I don’t want any problem, okay? I didn’t know you knew the Alpha on a personal level, and I wouldn’t have asked you out if I had known, trust me.”
My eyebrows furrowed. “Wait, what? What are you talking about? What does the Alpha have to do with this?” No, it shouldn’t be what I was thinking.
“Come on, Hailey. Dominic is the Alpha, and is very well known in the city. And, I’m sorry if I stepped over the line, or crossed a boundary. Trust me, it was not my intention. I just thought… it doesn’t matter. I’m sorry, and it won’t happen again. I promise.”
“Did- Did Dominic tell you not to talk to me? Did he say something to you?”
His silence was all the confirmation I needed.
“Oh, my God. He did, didn’t he?”
“Hailey-”

“No. You don’t have to apologize, okay? This is not your fault. Trust me. He has a tendency to do that, and I can’t believe he’s doing it again. Look Richard, I know that I already told you that I see you as just my friend and nothing more, I still stand on that. But trust me, it isn’t because of the Alpha. He and I, are over. He has nothing to do with us, and why we are or aren’t friends. Goddess, I can’t believe him. He just can’t stay away, can he?”
“So, you two are not… together?”
I sighed. “No, Richard. We are not. I’m his mate, we were once married, but that was six years ago. Trust me, he has nothing to do with us, or you. Okay? Don’t let him get into your head, and make you doubt our friendship. If I didn’t want to be your friend, then I wouldn’t have agreed to have lunch with you. You’re a great guy, Richard, and don’t let him get in the way.”
He still looked unconvinced. “I’m sorry, Hailey. I really am. I want nothing more than to be your friend. But, if the Alpha can threaten me for you, who he’s supposed to be separated from, I think he’s not completely out of the picture. He’s still possessive over you, and if I don’t stay away, who knows what he might do. I really can’t risk losing my job. I’ve studied so hard and fought so hard for this position. I don’t want it taken away from me, when I could have just done the right thing by just leaving you alone. Look, Hailey. I don’t want to sound rude or anything. But, it’s probably better if we don’t associate with each other outside the hospital. It’s just safer for the both of us.”
“But-”
“Sorry, Hailey. I’ve got to go.”
With that, he walked away.
I stood there, in complete shock.
The audacity of that asshole. What the fuck was he thinking? How dare he try to get in the middle of a thing that didn’t involve him? How fucking dare he?
Who the hell did he think he was, trying to control everything?
He couldn’t just barge into my life, and try and make everyone bow down and submit.
He was unbelievable, and the audacity he had was astonishing. Of course, he had to be an ass. It wasn’t enough that he had a wife, now he had to ruin things with me.
He was just such a controlling freak, that he still thinks he can control my life even after he divorced me.
But, not anymore.
I couldn’t wait to give him a piece of my mind, and see the look on his face when I do. How
