CHAPTER SIXTY–EIGHT–1

HAILEY

I woke up with a searing fever, and was burning. I was sweating so much, and my body was aching. I groaned, and tried to sit up. I was exhausted and had no energy, and even the slightest movement caused me pain.

This was the worst time to get sick, and the worst timing. I felt so weak, and didn’t have the strength to get up. I tried to move, but gave up.

I was having a migraine, and I couldn’t even open my eyes. I felt so frustrated that I couldn’t get up and do everything I needed to do today. Like prepare Liam for school, get ready for work. Hell, I had two major surgery to perform today!

But, it seemed as if my body wasn’t going to cooperate with me, and it had different plans.

I sighed and closed my eyes, hoping that when I woke up again, the fever would be gone.

When I woke up again, the first thing I noticed was that my head was pounding and I felt ten

times worse.

I slowly sat up, and was dizzy.

I didn’t know how long I had been asleep, but the sun was already shining through the

window, and the birds were chirping.

“Mommy!”

I heard Liam running towards my room, and jumped on the bed.

“Are you okay? Why are you still sleeping?”

I tried to smile, and gently ruffled his hair. “Good morning sunshine. Mommy isn’t feeling well, so she has to rest. Can you go call aunty Val for me, please?”

“Are you sick? What’s wrong?”

“It’s just a cold, honey. Go get aunty Val for me.”

“Okay.”

He nodded, and jumped off the bed.

A couple of minutes later, Valerie came rushing in, looking worried.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?”

“Mommy is sick.” Liam answered.

“I don’t want it to seem like I’m asking for too much, but can you drop Liam off on your way to school? I don’t have the energy, and I don’t want him to get sick as well.”

“Of course, love. Do you need anything? I can get some soup, or something. I can drop Liam off, and stay with you today. It’s not a problem.”

“No. It’s fine, really. I can manage. It’s probably just a cold, and will pass. I think I can manage, I’m just sad that I have to give another doctor the surgery. I had a long week, and was hoping to finish with this case.”

“We have two surgeons that are more than qualified to do the job, Hailey. Don’t worry about it, and just relax. Get some rest. But, I’m serious about staying back. I don’t like seeing you like this, Hails. I’m worried.”

“Don’t be. I’m fine. It’s just a little cold, and I should be fine. And I know the doctors are very capable, and will do an excellent job. But, it’s not about that. You know how much the family wanted me to be their doctor, and I have been working on this case for so long, that it’s hard for me to let it go. But, the truth is, I’m in no shape or form to operate. I’ll give them the best care, and they’ll have the best doctors, but still.”

She nodded. “Don’t worry about it, okay? The doctors have it covered,all you need to do is rest, okay? Liam, can you go to your room, please?”

Liam nodded, and ran out.

“Hailey, I’m going to take your blood, and run an overall test. But…”

“But, what?”

“When was the last time you had your period?”

“What? What has that got to do with this- oh.” It’s not possible.

“I’m not asking this because I’m your friend, or because I’m concerned, but because I’m your nurse, Hailey. When was the last time you had your period?”

“I–l… umm, last month? Yeah, last month.”

“Have you been sexually active, or not?”

“Not necessarily active, but I’ve had sex in the past month. Why? Do you think…”

“You need to take a pregnancy test. It can’t be a coincidence that you’re experiencing the

“Val, there’s no way. I’ve been on birth control. There’s no way in hell I’m pregnant for Dominic.”

After a few hours of sleeping, I woke up to the door opening.

I expected Val, but was shocked when Dominic walked in.

He had a bag, and he looked so exhausted.

“Hi. Are you okay?”

“I could ask you the same thing.

“Was he wearing a condom?”

“No, but-”

“There’s no but, Hailey. We don’t have a pregnancy test strip here, which will leave me with taking your blood and urine for a test. I should be able to get you the results when I come

home.”

I nodded, my heart feeling like it was about to jump out of my chest.

“Look, don’t overthink this okay? Well know the answers once I’m back, and no matter what the result might be, you’ll have me, okay? I know this is a lot for you to take in, but it’s important that we know, okay? So, no panicking until we have the results.”

“Okay. Thank you.‘”

“How do you feel?”

“I’m not feeling any better, and I can’t get up. My head is hurting, and I’m tired. I have some drugs in my drawer tho, I’ll just take some and see if that works.”

“Where are they?”

“In the second drawer.”

She walked towards my night stand, and took the key. She unlocked the drawer, and took the pills.

She poured me a glass of water, and handed me the pills.

“Thanks.”

go make a quick soup for you, and then I’ll drop Liam off.”

“What time is it?”

“About eight am. Are you sure you don’t want me to stay back and help you?”

“It’s okay. Go. Thanks.”

She nodded, and walked out.
