CHAPTER NINETY-ONE-1

HAILEY

It was two days to Christmas, and the entire town was filled with Christmas cheer. The streets

were decorated with lights, the stores had the Christmas theme, and everyone was out and about shopping for their families.

There was a sense of peace and happiness in the air, and I was excited about the holidays. Winter was finally here and the rooftop and cars were covered with snow.

We had put up Christmas tree, lights, santa, and lots of other decorations. We even had a mini snowman built, and I had taken a few pictures of it.

I was a sucker for all things winter, and the season was one of my favorites.

I just loved everything about the season.

The cold, the snow, the decorations, the Christmas cookies, the food, the hot cocoa, the music, the spirit. The fact that you could come together with your loved ones made it more heartwarming. And a feeling of sadness filled my heart as I remembered that today makes it officially eleven years and the eleventh Christmas I was spending without my parents.

On this day, ten years ago on a Christmas eve, my parents had a fatal accident that claimed their lives and made me an orphan in an instant. I was fifteen, would have been sixteen the next month. I remembered that I had insisted on following them to go Christmas shopping on that day, but they refused because they wanted to buy me surprise presents and didn’t want me to see what they

were buying.

They left without me, and were never seen or heard of again.

Later, the cops found their car crushed at the bottom of a ravine with their dead bodies inside, and it was later discovered that they had died on impact.

Their car had been pushed off the road by a truck that had lost control. It had come barreling toward my parents’ car, and they had been hit and fell over the cliff. That was it. They were gone, and I was alone. No other living relatives, no one to take me in.

The next few months had been a whirlwind, and I was moved from home to home. The families were nice, but it didn’t feel like home. None of them felt right, and I couldn’t stand being there.

When I turned sixteen, I had decided that enough was enough, and I had to get out. I couldn’t live there anymore, and wanted my freedom. So, I packed my bags, left a note for the family, and hit the road. I lived in shelters, had to beg for money, and had to fight for what I wanted.

That was the most difficult time in my life, but it also taught me the most important lesson. I learned the importance of survival, of fighting for your dreams, of never giving up. It taught me to be independent, to stand on my own two feet, and not depend on others.

It had been a rough ride, and it hadn’t been easy. But, I had made it. I had fought for my dreams,

and had come out stronger.

“Hey, are you okay?” Dominic’s touch snapped me out of my reverie.

I hadn’t realized the tears that had welled up in my eyes and had fallen down my cheeks. He looked at me and back at the road. We were going to pay my parents a visit at the cemetery.

I gave him a weak smile. “Yeah. Just lost in my thoughts.”

Dominic slowly pulled the car to a stop at the side of the road, and turned to me. He leaned over, and wrapped his arms around me.

“You can cry if you want, you know. Don’t hold it in. It’s okay. I’m here.”

I closed my eyes and buried my face in his chest. He didn’t say a word, but simply held me in his

arms.

“It’s just… I miss them. I don’t know, sometimes, I feel like they are still with me. Like, I can see them, talk to them. I even remember the day that they died, and the cops knocking on our door and telling me the news. How could they do this to me? To their only daughter? Their only child? Why did they have to leave me alone in this cruel world? Sometimes, I just want to talk to them one more time, feel their hugs and kisses. See their faces and their smiles. Bake Christmas cookies with my mother, and play board games with my father…”
