Any bill like this will automatically be discarded if its approval rate falls below thirty percent.
“What about structured resettlement housing?”
“The majority refuse to accept it.”
Tatiana paused and shook her head, “Then we have to abandon this plot and select a new site.”
Yet Liam clearly had no intention of giving up.
This was his most critical official project at present, and he was determined to see it through.
When the dinner ended, Liam offered to drive her home, but Tatiana shook her head to decline.
“I want to stop somewhere else. There’s no need to trouble yourself with a ride; you can head back first.”
“Where are you going?”
“There’s an old pastry shop around here with amazing desserts. Their macarons are especially good, and I’ve been craving them.”
“Are they really that delicious?”
“They’re absolutely incredible.”
“I’d love to try some too. Let’s go together.”
Just what she’d been waiting to hear.
She smiled and nodded.
The shop was within walking distance, so they set off on foot.
They strolled along the riverside walkway, cool wind brushing against them, enjoying a rare moment of peace and ease.
Tatiana put on a relaxed front and hummed a soft tune, her voice sounding beautifully melodic –though she’d deliberately adjusted her tone to sound sweeter.
A faint smile lingered on Liam’s lips as he watched her figure walking ahead, seemingly savoring this brief spell of warmth just as much as she did.

They’d met frequently these past few days, and he was certain he’d sensed her softening toward him.
The line dividing them had grown blurrier by the minute.
Neither had crossed the boundary, yet both had forgotten it existed.
Suddenly, a deranged man burst out from the tree line. He wore tattered cotton winter wear wildly out of season, his hair matted and face filthy, his whole demeanor clearly unhinged.
At the sight of him, Liam instinctively stepped forward two paces to shield Tatiana behind him, “Let’s move right, away from him.”
Tatiana nodded, growing wary as well.
They put distance between themselves and the strange man.
And they were ready to leave.
The man appeared to be humming to a park statue, staggering unsteadily, plainly suffering from severe mental instability.
The moment they drew closest to him, the man spun around abruptly, clutching a knife in his hand, and charged at them in a wild frenzy.
“Be careful!”
Panic flashed across Liam’s face. He lunged to pull Tatiana out of harm’s way, only to trip over a raised stone slab, losing his balance.
“Watch out!”
Tatiana darted forward, stepping between him and the attacker.
The blade sliced viciously across her shoulder. Fresh blood welled up instantly, soaking through her white gown.
The stark red burned Liam’s eyes, and rage exploded within him, “Tatiana!”
He lifted his leg and kicked the assailant hard.
The man yelped and crashed onto the pavement.
Liam raised his fist to strike, but a muffled groan from Tatiana pulled his attention back to her without thought.
Seizing the opening, the man snatched up his knife and fled at top speed.

Liam’s face turned livid, but at the sight of her arm soaked crimson with blood, he swept her into his arms and rushed straight to the hospital.
The cut ran deep, and she’d lost a great deal of blood. By the time they arrived at the ward, Tatiana’s complexion was frighteningly pale.

“Tatiana!”
She forced a faint, weak smile, “I’m alright.”
Once they reached the hospital, he urgently summoned doctors to treat her wound at once.
Six stitches were required to close the gash on her formerly flawless arm.
As Liam stared at the jagged, centipede-like scar winding across her skin, his expression turned uncommonly grave.
Even with local anesthetic injected, the pain remained agonizing. Tatiana’s face paled further, cold sweat beading all over her forehead.
Liam softened his tone, “Squeeze my hand if it hurts.”
She shook her head, enduring the torment silently without a single whimper.
After the stitching was complete, the doctor explained all post-care precautions. At Liam’s insistent demand, a private ward was arranged for overnight observation, in case any bone damage had occurred.
Tatiana did not object, lying weakly on the hospital bed to rest.
Once he’d settled her in, Liam stepped outside to make calls.
He would track down the attacker no matter what it took.
Yet the outcome left him utterly disappointed.
All surveillance cameras covering that stretch of riverside were broken, and there were no eyewitnesses at the scene.
Furthermore, the man’s disheveled, unhinged appearance marked him as a mentally unstable vagrant-identifying him would prove immensely difficult.
Liam flew into a furious rage.

“Liam, what-what’s wrong?”
“What’s wrong? I nearly got stabbed to death!”
He could barely contain his boiling anger.
