Chapter 239
Selene
“Come and get your food! Food is already scarce, so come and get your food! One loaf of bread is just twenty slivers!” A man shouted from behind his small wooden stand, pointing at the pitifully few loaves displayed in front of him.
The people gathered around him stared with deep frowns etched on their faces, their anger and frustration clear in the way they clenched their fists and muttered under their breath.
One man stepped forward, his voice rising with anger. “Gods, this is a complete cheat! Who would sell one loaf of bread for twenty slivers? This is plain robbery. It’s unacceptable!”
Another person nodded vigorously beside him, his tone dripping with resentment. “You’re right. This is a scam. Twenty slivers should buy twenty loaves, not just one. Who on earth runs their store like this?”
More voices joined in agreement, their eyes burning with hunger and rage as they glared at the vendor. The shop owner simply scoffed at them, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked at the growing crowd with disdain. “You’re right, twenty slivers should not cost twenty loaves of bread, but that was before. You think it’s the same as now? There is already scarcity of food. Do you even know how I was able to get this bread? Flour, yeast, salt, and water, everything is hard to find. But I still managed to get a spot from Big Brother Conqueror. It’s hard as it is. Or do you think I run a charity case? With all my hard work, if I sell bread for just one sliver, I’m cheating myself.”
He waved them off dismissively. “Shoo, go away if you’re just going to talk and not buy anything. If you can’t do anything then you should just starve to death.” He turned back to the others and continued shouting, “Come and get your food! Food is already scarce so come and get your
food! One loaf of bread is just twenty slivers!”
The men looked at each other, hesitating, until one stepped forward and slammed forty coins onto the table. “That is 40 coins. Give me two.”
The shop owner’s eyes lit up with greed, and he smiled widely as he counted the money. “Of course. I will give you two. You’re smarter than some people. You took your chance before it completely finished.”
He grabbed two loaves and was about to hand them over when the other two men who had been complaining suddenly cut in, stepping forward aggressively. “This is not fair! It should be one for each person!” one of them yelled.
The second nodded furiously. “Yes! If you sell it to one person, how will others buy? Give me one now!”

The first buyer frowned and shouted back. “No! I will not allow this! I already bought two
The man took my money. The transaction is over!”
Chaos erupted as the two men fought for the bread, and soon more people joined in. pushing and shoving desperately. The shop owner stood behind his stand, watching the madness with a satisfied smile on his face, looking like a fisherman who had just hauled in a massive catch.
I watched the entire scene from a distance, an amused smile playing on my lips. Behind me, Lucas and Silas stood quietly, observing the growing disorder with me. Lucas’s eyes flashed for a moment before he turned to me. “Don’t tell me…”
I didn’t say anything. I simply shrugged lightly before walking forward, my steps unhurried as I moved forward.
My hair and face were carefully covered, so nobody paid any real attention to me as I moved through the crowded market. People were far too concerned with the growing shortages of food and the rising prices to notice a hooded stranger walking among them. I kept my eyes focused on the stalls ahead, trying to recall exactly where I needed to go. The market was always so chaotic and crowded that it was easy to lose track of the right path, so I stayed alert, scanning every corner.
“Where are you going? We have been walking for so long,” Lucas complained lazily, his voice carrying that familiar, playful boredom.
I shook my head slightly and answered him, “You could just stay away instead of following me, you know.”
The Phoenix chuckled. “And miss whatever you are planning? Nah, you’re far more interesting than you give yourself credit for.”
I sighed softly. Him being entertained like this was still better than him deciding to go on a killing spree out of boredom, so I let him tag along without further argument.
Just as I was about to continue searching, a loud, greedy voice rang out above the noise of the crowd. “Come here! Come and buy your servants! Strong, able men who can do whatever you want!”
My heart skipped a beat. I paused immediately and turned toward the voice, my steps quickening as I pushed through the throng of people. The voice continued boasting, “They are able men! They can protect you, serve as guards, or be used for manual labour. They can do anything you need!”
I finally stepped into the clearing where the voice was coming from. In the middle of a small stage stood a fat, money-hungry man with a slick smile on his face. Two large guards flanked him while several of his men stood around the platform, keeping watch. I ignored them all

and focused instead on what truly mattered, the people chained on the stage.
