Chapter 235

Selene

Oh, before I forgot.

I turned to Avery and leaned in closer, causing her to instinctively lean back a little. I could hear her heart skip a beat so loudly it was almost comical. Her cheeks flushed instantly as she looked up at me with wide eyes and a slightly nervous voice. “M-my lady?”

I smiled, unable to help myself. Avery was truly one of the most beautiful women I had ever met in any of my lives. Her features were refined and elegant, but it was her eyes that drew people in, deep, expressive, and full of strength. She reminded me of Chloe in a way, that same spark of resilience hidden beneath a softer

exterior.

I leaned even closer until my lips were near her ear and whispered, “Your Highness, have you done what I asked you to do?”

Avery’s eyes darted to mine for a brief moment before understanding dawned on her. Her face turned serious, all traces of shyness gone. She nodded. “I did. I made sure to secure enough resources before the famine and drought started showing signs.” She paused, then continued. “Before you disappeared, you told me about the famine. At first, I didn’t understand. I thought it was impossible since there were no signs of it anywhere in the world. But at the end of the day, I just couldn’t help trusting you. My wolf told me trusting you in this life would be the best decision I could ever make.”

Avery looked straight into my eyes and smiled, like a child proudly telling her mother what she had accomplished. “So, I secretly saved as much as I could for the famine. I plan to use my resources to help the people, especially the lower class. Thanks to you, it should be enough to keep our pack alive for the meantime. A lot of people won’t be affected by the famine.”

I nodded, satisfied with her answer. I moved back slightly and placed my hand gently on top of her head. “Good job, Avery. I plan to help you as much as I can with anything.” I said, then turned to Evelyn, who was standing nearby, and asked, “And may I bother you to keep Evelyn by your side for the meantime?”

Evelyn’s eyes widened in panic. “My lady, please! I want to follow you. I will be good. Please don’t abandon

me.”

I smiled at her. “I won’t abandon you again, Evelyn. But I have things to do, and it will be bothersome to put my mind at ease. I have to keep you in a safe place.”

Evelyn looked like she wanted to argue, but I had already made up my mind. I turned to the maid standing behind Princess Avery. The maid nodded without hesitation. “I will protect her, Lady Selene.”

I nodded. Just as I turned to leave, Princess Avery suddenly caught my hand in hers, gripping it tightly. I looked back at her and raised an eyebrow curiously.

Princess Avery bit her lip nervously, her voice coming out soft and hesitant as she looked at me with genuine concern in her eyes. “Selene, I-I know what my brother did is unforgivable. I won’t beg you to forgive him. But if people knew that you predicted the famine and even helped them in secret by telling me… you would immediately be recognised as the Moonborn. You would be respected by everyone in the pack. Your life would be easy. Why don’t you tell everyone?”

She stared at me as if she truly wanted things to go well for me, as if she believed that revealing the truth would somehow fix everything.

I met her gaze calmly and replied in a steady voice, “You’re mistaken, Avery.”

She blinked, “W-what?”

“I never did any of it to protect the pack,” I said flatly, my tone carrying no warmth. “I did it to protect you. I’m not particularly interested in playing the role of a hero, and I don’t care if I have to be a villain. All I care about in this lifetime is me and the people I choose to keep close. Everything else is secondary. I didn’t come back to save the world. I came back to save myself.”

My eyes flashed, and my lips quirked up into a small smirk. “And I will destroy anyone who tries to harm even a single hair on my head.”

Avery stared at me, her expression shifting into something between disbelief and horror. I could hear her thoughts clearly in my mind: ‘Selene…. what did she go through to change this much? Just what did these people make her become?’

I didn’t bother responding. I had lived through ten lifetimes to learn one simple, undeniable truth, it was no longer about other people. It was about me. I mattered the most.

I reached out and gently patted her head. “Take care of yourself, Avery.”

I turned around and started walking away, with Silas falling into step silently behind me. Before I could get far, I heard Avery’s maid whisper to her in a low voice, “Thank the gods we are not her enemies, Princess Avery. I feel bad for anyone stupid enough to make her their enemy.”

I didn’t react. I simply kept walking forward without looking back.

When we had moved a good distance from the garden, something suddenly flashed in front of me, a burst of red flame that quickly materialized into a familiar figure. Lucas stood there with his arms casually behind his head, his golden eyes looking down at me with lazy amusement as his red hair glowed faintly in the sunlight. He walked backward while I continued moving forward, keeping pace effortlessly.

Silas froze for a brief second but quickly relaxed once he recognized who it was.

Lucas smirked at me. “You amuse me, Selene.”

I kept walking without slowing down, raising my eyebrow.

“I didn’t know there was a soft side in you,” he continued, still moving backward with that same relaxed posture. “You claim you’re a villain, yet you knew she was going to help the people and still told her. You indirectly saved the pack.”
