KINGSTON
My phone was ringing all morning, just when I was supposed to be getting some sleep. Aeliana and I were up half the night, I woke her up to eat because her stomach kept growling while she slept, and after eating, she wanted dessert. When we finally got to resting, I received a message from my father, telling me the pack council needed to see me for an emergency meeting.
I’m already irritated I had to leave the comfort of my bed at eight in the morning to be surrounded by old gysers who have a problem that they could have solved without my involvement. I always let my father handle anything with them, my council is the younger generation, that's how it works, he has his, and I have mine, but occasionally, we overlap. This helps keep order around the pack as I keep expanding.
The room smells like freshly brewed hibiscus tea, the cup in front of me is a reminder that I could be having breakfast with my wife. It infuriates me to the point of nausea.
“What is this emergency you got me out of bed for?” I sigh, staring around the room.
My father sits at the head of the table, silently watching me with a worried look in his eyes. I fear I might have fallen into some sort of trap by attending without Rowan, he can sit in on emergency meetings with the older council.
Elder Winston clears his throat, “It’s about you, well umm Aeliana.”
“My Aeliana?” I frown.
“Yes, Alpha.” He nods. “There have been a few matters of concern made known to us.”
“She’s seeing a shrink,” Gamma Cole chimes in.
“Therapist,” I snarl, glaring at him. If he were one of mine, Audrey would have been orphaned the first time he spoke ill of Aeliana. “And what about it?”
“She’s not mentally sound.” Gamma Venice quietly says.
Again, I turn to my father, catching a smile on his face. So everyone just ignored it back then? Because no one ever said a word to us or insinuated we had something beyond friendship.
“Gamma Hartley, you’re going too far,” Elder Winston chimes in. “You’re straying from the topic at hand.”
“The topic at hand is still in hand.” He counters softly, slightly relaxing. “You’re trying to paint my daughter as unfit for her role.”
“We aren’t,” Gamma Cole argues. “Her daily visits to the shrink give that way.”
Gamma Hartley snaps again, both of them going back and forth, Gamma Venice joining him and Elder Campbell too. Tired of the bickering, I slam my fist against the table, the room automatically going silent and all eyes shifting back to me.
