I shake my head. “I asked him to reject you,” I swallow. “I begged him to do it, I was scared, and I didn’t know what a third would bring, but I realised you weren’t being brought into the bond, you were in it from the start.” I admit, “That little something missing from our bond wasn’t a baby, it was you.”
“No!” She vigorously shakes her head.
“I’m sorry, Noah,” I suck in a breath. “I love Rowan more than anything, and I couldn't stomach sharing him. I made a selfish choice, I convinced him we were better off without you, I made him feel like he had to apologise for his feelings, convinced him you didn’t need him either, everything just seemed—” I pause, looking for the right words, words that won’t offend.
“Perfect, without me.” She finishes for me. “And it will be back to perfect when I leave, don’t worry about it.” She says, her lips curving into that warm smile that makes me feel like a terrible person for what we did to her. “I’m never coming back. If I ever do, I won’t come near him, he is all yours.”
“He is yours too,” I softly say. “I’m sorry I tried to take him from you.”
Noah shifts, shaking her head. “He is your mate,” she says, appearing done with him. “You have his mark, I don’t. We have nothing. You aren’t taking him away from me because he was never mine, Danielle.”
“He is your mate.”
She shrugs, “Doesn’t matter, he rejected me already. The thought as good as doing it, he kept it from me because that was what he wanted.”
“He did it for me,” I confess, “Rowan didn’t want to hurt my feelings.”
That makes her smile, “Exactly, you.” She nods with a satisfied grin. “Your feelings. You’re what matters to him, I don’t, I never will. It’s always going to be you.” Her voice drops, “So fuck the mate bond, I’ll find another.”
“That’s funny,” I almost laugh. “I thought the same thing about you. Every night, when he kept turning, I kicked him out so he could be with you. I thought to myself, she’s the one. He loves her more, he has more fun with her, she’s exactly what he needs.”
“Okay,” she says, giving me no reaction as she returns to packing her clothes. “Tell him I said bye when you get home.”
The door creaks open, and someone in a flared pink dress steps in. For a moment, I assume it's her friend. “Miss Noah, I got your order.” She says, bringing her drinks and a delivery bag.
“Thank you,” she cheerfully says, taking the drinks from her. “This is umm…Danielle,” she says, “Beta Rowan’s mate.”
The way she says Rowan’s mate nerves me, she says it as if she were talking about a stranger she has yet to meet, but Rowan is her mate, too.
“Oh, hi ma’am,” the woman lightly bows. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Ivory, the maid.” She pauses, “Sorry, the house beautician.” Shs giggles. “Miss Noah doesn’t like the word maid.”
“I see.” I nod. I’ve not seen Noah interact with any servants, but I assumed she was the worst boss because she is always giving orders, but she appears very calm with her house help. And Ivory seems to be comfortable enough not to say anything.
Ivory, fish out my closet,” Noah says. “And whatever you don’t want to keep, throw it in the donation box. The new ones arrived, they’re in my room.”
“Excuse me.” She bows, walking away.
“Do you want some?” Noah asks, nodding to the drink on the table. “Take it, it's really good.” She grins.
“Noah, let me right my wrong.” I sigh. Her softness towards me unnerves me. “I’m sorry about everything. I don’t want you to leave, you belong here.”
“What for?” she pauses, her smile falling. “To play sister wives with you?”
