Chapter 8
It felt like lightning had struck him square in the chest. Kenneth stood frozen, unable to move.
Declared… deceased?
Kenneth lunged forward and grabbed his friend by the arm. “You must be mistaken. What do you mean, declared deceased?”
His friend paused, then said, “There’s no mistake. The documents are all here.
“Kenny, your wife was declared deceased four days ago in Seattle. Since she wasn’t a local resident, the paperwork had to be routed through our system.
“She has a legal representative. The attorney handled the entire declaration process.”
She’d be… dead.
Kenneth’s legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the floor.
It was a long while before Eduardo processed this news.
So Angelique’s phone wasn’t off because she didn’t want to answer. It was off because she was already gone.
But why? Had someone killed her?
Sandra grabbed Kenneth’s friend, her voice trembling. “Sir, was my daughter murdered? Has the killer been caught?”
The officer shook his head. “It’s reported as cancer. Her attorney didn’t give many details, but she said the family would be informed in a few days. Didn’t expect you to show up here first.”
Cancer…
The word exploded in Sandra’s mind.
Angelique had died because of cancer…
She suddenly remembered. The day Angelique disappeared, she had smiled faintly and asked, “If one day I really did die from the illness… would you remember me?”

Chapter 8
So, she had already been sick back then.
Sandra tried to figure it out. Why hadn’t she noticed?
What had she said in reply?
“Die? Sweetheart, look at you-you’re glowing. Stop saying such ominous things.
Sandra sank slowly to the floor. A tide of despair welled up inside her, cold and suffocating.
But no tears came. She simply stared ahead, hollow-eyed.
After a long silence, she stood again. Her voice, when it came, was eerily calm as she looked at the police officer. “Can you locate that attorney? I want to find her.”
“We’re not sure,” the officer replied. “But she did say she’d contact you in about three days.”
Sandra seemed lost, and Eduardo was no better.
Kenneth drove them home, saw them inside, then returned to his car alone.
He stared at the steering wheel, only now realizing his hands were shaking.
He still couldn’t accept it.
Angelique was such a good person; how could she be dead from cancer?
Cancer always had signs. She hadn’t shown any…
Then he remembered.
He remembered the unexplained nosebleeds and the collapse a few days ago.
He had thought she was pretending to be sick, that she was trying to keep him from looking after Catherine.
But she hadn’t been acting. She had been fighting cancer.
Kenneth slammed his fist against the steering wheel, disgust and grief tearing through him.
Why? Why had he seen nothing until now?
Cancer…
