Am I A Good Girl novel Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Catherine’s face darkened. She pulled out her phone and dialed Angelique.

The call went through-but no one answered.

Then, the line went dead.

“Bitch. Fucking bitch!” Catherine screamed on the sidewalk, ignoring the startled stares of passersby.

She had thought Angelique was soft, a pushover she could squeeze dry. She hadn’t expected her to strike back at the most critical moment.

What now?

If she couldn’t get the money, all her ugly secrets would come spilling out.

Suddenly, she thought about Eduardo, Sandra, and Kenneth…

She forced herself to calm down, hailed another taxi, and returned to the hospital.

Ten minutes later, Eduardo, Sandra, and Kenneth opened the door and walked in.

Catherine pretended nothing had happened. She smiled sweetly.

“Mom, Dad, Kenneth-you’re here!”

Sandra asked after her as usual, then glanced around the room and frowned.

“Huh? Angelique didn’t come?”

Catherine’s heart lurched, but she kept smiling. “No, Mom.

“She turned the company and the shops over to me. She’s finally relaxed, so maybe she’s to have some fun.”

Eduardo sighed. “That girl… still as willful as ever. We asked her to come help arrange someone to repaint the house. Just that, and she kept dodging it.”

He shook his head. “I’m calling her now.”

He dialed-but all he heard was the cold tone of a powered-off phone.

“Turned off?” He frowned. “Looks like she really is out somewhere.”

“What’s wrong with Angelique lately?” Sandra muttered irritably. “It’s so hard to get her to help Cathy with anything. I don’t know what she’s sulking about now.”

She texted Angelique, still grumbling.

Catherine watched them, the corner of her lips curving upward.

She thought, “Look, Angelique. This is exactly the ending I wanted. Even if you hate me down to your bones, I will still be just fine.

“So what if your assets haven’t been transferred to my name?

“Your parents-and your husband-will still spend money on me.

After a few more questions about Catherine’s health, Eduardo and Sandra left.

Yet somehow, Catherine couldn’t shake the feeling that something about their attitude toward her had shifted.

Later that evening, Kenneth dragged himself home after work, exhausted. He collapsed onto the sofa, eyes closed.

“Angie? Get me a glass of water.”

Only silence answered him. He sat up and looked around.

Only then did he remember-Angelique hadn’t come home for three days.

He pulled out his phone and called her, but her phone was off. His messages went unread.

Kenneth frowned and began scrolling through their chat history.

Almost every conversation was Angelique talking. Her messages filled most of the screen.

His replies were few and short. Most of them were just “Okay.”

His chest tightened. Over the years… he really had neglected her.

He’d met Angelique right after graduating from college.

Because of Angelique, he’d met Catherine then, too.

Angelique was steady, quiet, and unflappable.

No matter what life threw at her, she handled it with calm competence.

Catherine was the opposite. She was bright, lively, playful, and endlessly attentive.

During his dates with Angelique, Catherine was always there.

She was always sweet, always considerate, always keeping just the right distance to make him feel a tug-near, yet not quite his.

But had he actually loved Catherine?

Not really. He had simply been dazzled by her easy compliments, by how effortlessly she praised him, while Angelique rarely did.

He had been intoxicated, briefly, by the sweetness of it.

But deep down, he knew Angelique was the one who actually held him close in her heart.

He had only ever regarded Catherine as a younger sister—and since they were technically family, he didn’t want to create trouble.

Yet Angelique had changed. She had gone after Catherine like someone unhinged. That wasn’t like her at all.

And now she’d vanished.

Kenneth sighed and stared at his phone again. There was still no response.

Angelique had never ignored messages for this long before.

Maybe this time… she really was angry.

He set the phone aside and went to wash up.

He convinced himself she had simply gone away to clear her head-that in a few days, she would come home again.
