Although the healer had said Ursa could be discharged after a day, her parents insisted she stay a few more days for observation.
Baldwin agreed in the end.
And so,
for three days, Baldwin remained by Ursa’s bedside.
From luxury post-op supplements to the first bouquet of dew-fresh flowers each morning- anything Ursa mentioned, even in passing, he made happen. Personally.
The hospital room was overflowing with beautifully wrapped gift boxes. Holding her phone up with the pile of presents behind her, Ursa pouted sweetly. “Alpha, does this angle look good?
“Does it look weird?”
Baldwin nodded absentmindedly; his gaze swept through her latest Facebook post, nine photos neatly arranged, each featuring the flowers and jewelry he had given her.
The caption read, “The favored get a free pass for everything.”
Among the list of people who had liked the post, one name jumped out at him-Florence.
A frown creased his brow. He thought Florence would’ve reached out by now, cracked under the silence, and maybe sent a message or even called. But not only had she stayed quiet-she’d liked Ursa’s post?
That had to mean she was still paying attention. Still jealous.
The thought cooled some of his restlessness.
He had to hand it to her-she’d managed to hold out this long without contacting him.
Baldwin picked up his phone; without thinking, he opened their chat thread. The last message from her still sat there. “I agree to end the mate bond.”
His fingers hovered above the screen, but after a beat, he put the phone down. His expression hardened. Nice try, but he wouldn’t fall for it. Florence was just waiting for him to cave. It was textbook reverse psychology. This time, she was just better at playing the game.
On the day Ursa was finally discharged, she mentioned wanting a new necklace. Baldwin, as always, agreed.
At the mall, she chose a delicate wolf fang necklace adorned with rose quartz. Baldwin reached for his card to pay but paused-Florence had always liked this style too.

Almost instinctively, he told the saleswoman, “I’ll take two of those.”

Without blinking, the saleswoman discreetly slipped the second necklace into a bag and placed it in the backseat of the car.
Ursa never noticed.
Later, after dropping Ursa off, Baldwin drove home alone with the shopping bag in hand- only to find the house eerily empty. Florence wasn’t there.
In fact, it looked like she hadn’t been home in a while.
Clutching the bag tighter, Baldwin rushed to the bedroom and flung open the closet doors. Her clothes-gone. Every trace of her-gone.
Panic surged. He started calling her, over and over. He knew her number by heart now. But each time, the call went straight to voicemail.
“The number you have dialed is not in service. Please try again later.”
He collapsed onto the couch, phone in hand.
All his messages couldn’t get across; the single tick filled the screen.
He tried tapping into his alpha senses to track her-but strangely, nothing came through. Not even a flicker. That had never happened before. Mates shared a unique bond, a spiritual link that let them feel each other’s presence no matter the distance. All he had to do was focus, and he’d always been able to find her. Unless-
A searing pain suddenly exploded deep within his soul. His wolf howled in anguish inside his mind, thrashing and clawing in agony.
“Something’s tearing apart our mate bond!”
Baldwin staggered, his face turning pale as he gripped his head like it might split open. A thought crashed through the chaos-The Witch of the Woods. There were rumors about a potion she brewed. A rare, forbidden kind that could sever a mate bond instantly. One drink. That was all it took. Whether the other party agreed or not-it was over.
Had Florence taken it? When? Had she genuinely meant to cut him off, once and for all?
Then he remembered something-the birthday gift the gamma had mentioned. Heart pounding, he stumbled toward the garage like a man possessed.
In the trunk, a silver gift box sat quietly in the corner. The label bore Florence’s delicate handwriting, “To Baldwin.”
