Chapter 14 First Deal
When the cab finally stopped in front of the villa, Florence was taken aback by the luxurious gate plate gleaming under the sunlight.
She had assumed the address Zera gave her was just an ordinary apartment. She wasn’t expecting a private, standalone villa-complete with a spacious balcony and surrounded by tranquil greenery.
Dragging her suitcase behind her, she stepped through the front door. The sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow across the pristine floors.
It was clear someone had been keeping the place spotless-not even a speck of dust in sight.
Florence quickly claimed a bedroom, unpacked a few changes of clothes, and hung them neatly in the walk-in closet.
Then she collapsed onto the soft mattress, just as her phone buzzed.
Zera had messaged, “I’m free tomorrow. Let’s grab a bite?”
Florence agreed, then set the phone aside.
Next to the bed, the bookshelf was crammed with novels. She reached for one out of habit and began reading. Before she knew it, sleep had taken her.
By the time sunlight touched her pillow again, Florence was awake.
The unfamiliar room still felt a little surreal, and it took her a few minutes to adjust.
The digital clock by the bed read 6:30 a.m., two hours earlier than her usual wake-up time back in Nightfang Pack.
Her reflection in the mirror showed faint shadows under her eyes, but overall, she looked far more rested than she had in weeks.
Wanting to blend in with the local rhythm, she hopped in the shower and then made herself a simple breakfast-spaghetti aglio-olio, using the groceries she’d bought on the way in yesterday.
Just as she was applying a swipe of lipstick around noon, her phone buzzed again. Zera wrote, “I’m downstairs. Let’s eat!”
Florence smiled and headed out.
As they stepped into the small pizzeria, the warm scent of baking dough and herbs hit her— and her steps faltered.
The butter pizza. It wasn’t just any pizza. It was the butter pizza-an iconic dish from Nightfang Pack, made with a rare herb called Moonshade. That herb gave it its signature flavor -light, fragrant, and never greasy. It wasn’t something you could find anywhere else.
“I figured you’d be homesick for familiar food,” Zera said as she placed a steaming slice on Florence’s plate. “Go ahead. It’s the real deal-Nightfang Pack style.”
Florence took a bite. The buttery crust and subtle Moonshade scent hit her like a wave, unlocking a flood of memories. Her throat tightened unexpectedly, and her eyes stung.
Zera dabbed her mouth with a napkin and cut straight to business.
“So-think you can start work tomorrow?” she asked, half-joking. “I’ve got a huge client coming in the day after, and they specifically requested to meet with our tactical director. I can’t get away, and honestly, I don’t trust anyone else. So yeah, this pizza’s basically a bribe.”
But as she pushed open the door, she froze.
The silhouette standing by the floor-to-ceiling window-it felt familiar, like something pulled from a half-remembered dream.
But that didn’t make sense. She had just arrived in the country. She didn’t know anyone here.
Then the man turned around. Backlit by the setting sun, his eyes crinkled in that same warm smile she remembered from the airport.
“It’s you,” he said, voice calm and pleasant. “Looks like fate keeps throwing us together.”
He reached out a hand and introduced himself, “I’m Axel Westwood, Alpha of the Galeborn Pack. It’s a pleasure to work with you.”
Florence took his calloused hand, the warmth from his hand was too surreal to be real.
A flicker of light flashed in Axel’s gaze, which held something deeper, like he’d expected this meeting all along.
Florence took a slow, steady breath.
She needed to seal this deal. No matter what.
This deal had to go through. It was her first assignment, and if she could close it, the college would gain major funding. With Galeborn Pack’s name backing them, new talent would flood in. And maybe-just maybe-it would be enough for her to carve out a place of her own in this new life.
