Chapter 13 Welcome On Board, Ms Wraith!
“But isn’t tactical director a bit… over the top?”
Florence’s fingers trembled slightly as she clutched her phone. Her suitcase wheels clacked against the grooves in the airport floor, echoing in the space like a ticking clock.
On the other end of the line, Zera let out a warm, confident laugh. “Over the top? Florence, did you forget how we crushed the National Werewolf Tactical Championship back in college? Your strategy had even the military-trained wolves singing your praises.”
She paused, and her tone softened into something more serious. “I always believed in you, but back then, your whole world revolved around Alpha Baldwin.”
Light as it sounded, it pierced Florence’s heart like a needle-quiet but precise, and it touched the one place she’d carefully avoided all these years.
Leaning against a column, she watched travelers rush past, faces blurred in motion. Her memory suddenly came back. Once, she’d been the top of her class-famous for her brilliant tactical thinking, capable of leading any team to victory with minimal sacrifice.
Though the packs had remained largely at peace, conflicts flared occasionally, and there was always the looming threat of shapeshifters. In those circumstances, a brilliant strategist could tip the balance of an entire campaign. She’d received countless offers from pack military units after graduation.
Back then, she was so sure her future was him. Her every choice revolved around how to make him love her. She gave up her career, her passion, and her dreams.
But all along, it had been a mistake.
Baldwin’s heart had never truly belonged to her. No matter how much she gave, she was always not enough.
“Florence, you’ve been trapped in that marriage for way too long.”
Zera’s voice held a tenderness that Florence hadn’t realized she needed. “I saw you at that party the way you looked-it broke my heart. You weren’t yourself anymore.”
Florence bit her lip, her nails digging into her palm.
So the signs she thought she’d hidden so well-others had seen them clearly all along.
Her voice came out hoarse, “So… you’ve been trying to recruit me all these years?”
“Of course I have!”
Zera’s voice brightened. “Your skills-your tactical mind-whether in a classroom or on a battlefield, you’d shine like wildfire. But you were so wrapped up in your married life, I didn’t have the heart to burst your bubble. But now? You’re free! And you’re in Hegreau! That’s no coincidence, Florence. That’s the guidance from the Moon Goddess. You can’t say no now.”
Free!
“I’ll bring all the paperwork. I want to get started right away, Ms. Bird.”
The moment she hung up, Florence felt lighter.
Dragging her suitcase behind her, she tapped the location pin and followed it to the taxi stand.
As the cab pulled away, another message from Zera came in, “Welcome aboard, Ms. Wraith.”
Watching the city blur past through the window, Florence opened her photo gallery and began deleting every image tied to Baldwin.
One by one, they disappeared-until the last photo, their wedding portrait, vanished from the screen. She exhaled deeply and slipped her phone back into her bag.
Tall trees lined the road ahead, swaying gently in the breeze.
And for the first time in years, Florence felt something new blooming inside her-hope.
She had officially said goodbye to the girl she once was. Now, she was ready to become the woman she was always meant to be,
As for Baldwin? He was a chapter long overdue for closure.
