Ten minutes later, Baldwin received a call from the private detective. The man said Florence had been spotted in airport surveillance footage-but after that, she disappeared completely.
Due to severe weather, most flights had been canceled, and her final destination remained unknown.
As the minute hand on his watch struck seven, his phone lit up with a call from Ursa. Baldwin stared at the screen for a few seconds before finally pressing the green button.
“Alpha, what are you up to?”
Ursa’s voice was sugar-sweet. “I found this brand-new restaurant. Want to try it with me?”
Baldwin shifted the steering wheel, exiting the underground garage. “Text me the address. I’ll come pick you up.”
In the rearview mirror, he caught a glimpse of the deep shadows under his eyes. He hadn’t slept well at night since Florence disappeared.
During the drive, Ursa chatted away as usual, listing off the dishes she wanted to try. But Baldwin wasn’t really listening. His responses were limited to the occasional distracted “mm- hmm.”
When they finally arrived at the restaurant, he kept checking his phone, over and over again, hoping for new updates from the detective.
“Alpha, this is our newest dessert,” the smiling waiter offered. “We use imported cream-would you like to try it?”
“Sure,” Baldwin replied, his expression unreadable.
Ursa’s eyes lit up. Her fingertips grazed the edge of the table unconsciously as her imagination took flight.
What if—just maybe-there was something special hidden inside the cake? Like a ring? After all, Baldwin had promised to arrange their mating ceremony once she was discharged from the hospital.
But when the cake was finally served and Ursa sliced through it, her smile froze.
There was nothing inside.
But the voice on the other end was unfamiliar. “Hello, this is customer service from your bank. We’ve detected an unusual charge on your credit card.”
Baldwin’s grip on the phone tightened, veins bulging under his skin. Ursa stared at him, stunned. “Her? What are you looking for, Alpha?”
“I’m expecting an important call,” Baldwin replied coolly, without explaining.
He restarted the car. His voice had turned to ice.
Ursa bit her lip, her eyes brimming with tears. She didn’t say another word.
The night wind slipped in through the cracked window, bringing with it a creeping chill. Inside the car, the tension was thick.
Baldwin kept his gaze locked on the blurry red and green lights ahead. Only one thought echoed in his mind: he had to find Florence. D
