Chapter 9 The Choice He’ll Regret
The sharp scent of antiseptic filled the hospital room. A werewolf nurse moved with extra care, gently cleaning the wound on Ursa’s wrist.
Standing nearby, Baldwin and Martin Tara watched anxiously, every muscle in their bodies. tense with worry.
“Hey, gentle! You’re hurting her!” Baldwin snapped, his voice sharp and low when Ursa winced in pain again.
Startled, the nurse flinched and adjusted her touch immediately.
Ursa coughed softly, curled weakly in Baldwin’s arms.
“Don’t be scared,” Baldwin murmured, holding her close and patting her back soothingly. “It’s almost over.”
Tears welled in Ursa’s reddened eyes. “Alpha … Mom, Dad… I thought I’d never see you again. I was so scared.”
Tara’s heart ached at her words. She reached out, her hand trembling as she stroked Ursa’s back. “M-maybe it’s time you break the mate bond with Florence,” she said gently. “If the Alpha stays by your side, you’ll never have to suffer again.”
“Florence is just an omega,” she added, her tone firm. “She’s not worthy of an alpha. And now that the Alpha’s strength has stabilized, he doesn’t need her anymore.”
Ursa shook her head weakly. “No, Florence will be heartbroken. I-I do love the Alpha, but I don’t want to hurt her.”
Baldwin’s throat tightened. Watching Ursa push through her weakness just to consider someone else’s feelings stirred something deep and dull in his chest.
He gripped her hand. “I’ll talk to Florence tomorrow. She’ll understand.”
Martin let out a long sigh but didn’t argue. After all, Ursa had just survived a life-threatening attack, and she had once been Baldwin’s girlfriend. It felt almost right to make things whole again.
Ten minutes later, the nurse had finally finished cleaning the necrotic tissue around Ursa’s wrist, where the wolfsbane powder had done its damage. She was wheeled away for further testing to ensure no toxins remained in her bloodstream.
Baldwin slumped onto a bench outside the examination room, his exhaustion plain.
After a moment, he pulled out his phone.
Florence’s name glowed at the top of his lock screen. He hesitated, then tapped the call button.
“Florence,” he said hoarsely when she picked up.
She agreed so quickly.
Didn’t she always love me?
For some reason, his heart stuttered. A part of him recoiled-as if, by going forward with this, he was about to lose something precious.
In his mind, his wolf Levi let out a low, warning growl. “You’ll regret this. Florence was given to us by the Moon Goddess. She’s our true match.”
“No,” Baldwin pushed back. “My Luna isn’t someone twisted and cruel. She should be like Ursa -gentle, kind.”
He shut Levi’s voice out, ignoring the wolf’s furious howls in the corners of his consciousness.
And yet, when the silence settled again, something in Baldwin’s gut told him something was wrong. Deeply wrong. He just didn’t know what.
So, he forced the thoughts away.
Right now, all that matters is taking care of Ursa.
