Listening to Madison's tactful phrasing, Johnny sneered to himself.
Inappropriate? Please! Sam probably kicked her out of Goodwin Corp.
Still, Johnny kept that to himself and nodded, as if everything made sense. "Oh, I see. Then I guess it doesn't conflict."
As if.
Johnny would have to change his plans. He couldn't let Madison get into Quinn Group, so he had to act sooner than he had planned.
Johnny's gaze turned calculating for a second before he said, "Then I'll pick you up tomorrow and take you to Quinn Group. I can walk you through everything while we're there."
Madison raised an eyebrow, a little surprised. She thought about it and decided to go along with it.
And just like that, they started eating, each with their own agenda.
…
Sam finally got the board to calm down and promised there would be no surprises during tomorrow's bidding. Only then did he finally get those shrewd veterans out of the room.
He went back to his office and glanced at Madison's desk without really thinking, but she wasn't there. For a moment, he spaced out.
Benjamin walked in after him. He hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "Mr. Goodwin, if we hadn't had a backup plan, the damage would've been huge, and we would've really pissed off the board members."
Sam didn't say anything, but his demeanor grew colder. His anger was unmistakable.
Benjamin felt it hit him in the chest and realized he had already crossed a line. But remembering what had happened, he forced himself to keep going. "Mr. Goodwin—"
Sam cut him off. "Where's Madison right now?"
Benjamin swallowed the rest of his words and pulled out his phone to call the bodyguard watching her.
A moment later, he received the report. "Ms. Quinn just finished eating with Johnny, and she's heading back to the office."
He looked up after relaying the news, worry written all over his face.
Sam's expression gave nothing away, but the hand on his thigh curled into a tight fist. His demeanor grew colder than ever.
Even so, Benjamin could still sense the sadness underneath it. He decided not to hold back any longer and speak his mind at last.
"Mr. Goodwin, I know that when you're a teenager, every crush and friend feels special. But people change. After everything you've been through, you know that better than I do.
"You've already given more than enough. Don't lose yourself over someone who doesn't deserve you."
Sam remained silent after hearing that. His chest tightened sharply, and he could barely breathe. Even his eyes burned.
A notification flashed, snapping him out of his trance. It was from Maddox.
"Damn, I'm busy for half a day, and everything blows up? Sam, are you good? People keep texting you. Why aren't you replying?
"I told you Madison wasn't going to turn into a different person magically, but you wouldn't listen. Look how this turned out. She screwed up the project again!
"Where are you? Are you still breathing? Text me back, or I'm heading to Goodwin Corp right now.
"You know what, forget it. I'm coming over."
Message after message popped up on the screen. Sam read Maddox's worry in every single one of them.
He pressed his lips together, opened the chat, and typed, "I'm busy. You don't have to come over. I'm fine."
Maddox replied almost instantly. "Alright, if you're fine, get back to work. If you need anything, just say it and we're on it."
Sam sent a "Yeah" and ended the chat.
He closed the window and stared at the pinned contact at the top of the screen, his eyes going dull. Having finally made up his mind, he blocked and deleted Madison, clearing every trace of her from his phone.
Since Sam was truly done with Madison, he didn't want to leave himself any room for regret.
