Janet wasn't completely sure she could get Sam's itinerary, but she moved fast and pulled every favor she had. After a lot of back-and-forth, she finally got it.
"Miss Heiress, Edmund wasn't lying to you. Mr. Goodwin really did catch a flight to Marowa this evening."
Madison's hand tightened around her phone as she listened to Janet's voice.
So Edmund hadn't lied. Sam was really done with her.
Madison's breath hitched. She pressed a hand to her chest, pulling in huge, shaky breaths.
Janet could hear Madison struggling to breathe on the other end. Her breaths were thin and broken, as if she were fighting back a sob.
Worry spiked in Janet's chest. "Madison, what's going on?"
"I..." Madison meant to say she was fine, but the word barely made it out before her voice cracked. She couldn't hold it in anymore.
She had never imagined Sam would actually walk away from her in this second life. In the last one, he had chosen to burn to death rather than let her die.
The more Madison thought about it, the harder it was to breathe.
She had been wound tight from the second she woke up in this life, and now something in her finally snapped. She broke, the sobs ripping out of her before she could stop them.
Janet froze when Madison's sudden sobbing burst through the phone, then her nerves kicked in hard.
"Hey, don't cry. Mr. Goodwin probably went to Marowa for Project ET. It doesn't mean he's cutting ties with you. Madison, are you listening? Hello? Madison?"
Madison caught bits and pieces, but she was too shattered to say anything.
Janet seemed to understand. She murmured a few more words, then hung up.
All that remained was Madison's quiet sobbing. She didn't even know how long it had been before a red sports car pulled up in front of her. She looked up instinctively and saw Janet climbing out.
Janet spotted her sitting on the ground like someone who had been tossed aside. She glanced at the tightly closed gates of Northcrest Villa. Something twisted across her face before she forced it down.
She walked over, slipped off her sunglasses, and asked, "Miss Heiress, are you done crying yet? Do you want me to sit here and cry with you?"
Madison felt steadier now that she had let it all out. She wiped her tears and croaked, "No. I'm fine."
"Then get up and come with me." With that, Janet spun around and headed straight back to the car.
Madison watched her go, pressed her lips together, then pushed herself up and followed. The second she clicked her seatbelt, the engine rumbled to life.
She shot Janet a look. "Jan, where are we going?"
Madison instantly felt bad.
"I wasn't thinking straight back then. Don't hold that version of me against me, Jan," she said sheepishly.
Janet let that slide right past. "You owe me two favors now. You should start planning how you'll pay me back."
Madison leaned into it on purpose, acting extra meek to win her over. "Fine. I'll work myself to death for you. I'll listen to everything you say. I'll be your loyal sidekick."
Janet's expression actually softened, and she let out a tiny snort. "If I really turned you into my sidekick, Mr. Goodwin would probably bankrupt the Burkes by tomorrow. Is that repayment or betrayal?"
"Sam would never do that." The words flew out before Madison could stop them, and her mood dropped all over again.
Janet caught it immediately. "What now?"
Madison looked over and finally said what had been gnawing at her. "Jan, I think Sam's actually mad this time. He might really be done with me.
"No matter how upset he got before, he never blocked my number, never deleted me from chat, and he definitely never cleared out my stuff at Northcrest Villa. But this time, he did all of that.
"In the past, if I just turned around, I could always get to him. Now, even if I want to see him, it feels like there's a wall in my way every time. I'm scared, Jan…"
