Leonard waited a long moment without hearing anything from Sam, so he tried again. "Mr. Goodwin, would you like me to bring Ms. Burke in?"
Sam blinked out of his daze and fought the tightness in his chest. "Yeah. Send her in."
That actually suited him. He wanted to see for himself why Janet had come.
A moment later, Janet stepped in behind Leonard.
Sam nodded toward the couch beside him. "Sit."
Janet held back her haughty streak, tension mounting under the weight of his presence.
Sensing her restraint, Sam asked knowingly, "Ms. Burke, what brings you to Marowa?"
Janet snapped back to why she was there. She shoved her fear aside, pulled up the evidence on her phone, and held it out to him.
"Mr. Goodwin, I came to clear Maddie's name. She didn't betray you. Johnny set her up—he paid off the maid at your place. We found proof of their deal right here."
Sam glanced at the phone being handed to him. Something stirred in his chest, but he didn't reach for it.
He had already decided Madison had betrayed him again, so he never ordered anyone to look into it. He used to believe her, but every time he looked into the truth, the evidence proved she had sold him out for Johnny.
When Sam didn't respond, Janet felt panic tighten in her throat. She tried to convince him again about Madison's innocence. "Mr. Goodwin, she really didn't betray you this time."
Sam shot her a sideways look, his next words brushing past everything she had just said. "Ms. Burke, if I remember right, you and Madison cut ties four years ago."
"We did, but she apologized at the college reunion and wanted to make peace. She said she finally saw what Johnny and Kaitlyn were really like."
Sam raised a brow, studying her with an unreadable expression in his eyes. "So you believed her?"
Janet nodded. "I did, but I didn't just believe her blindly. I actually paid attention. After the reunion, she cut Johnny and Kaitlyn off. He was the one who kept coming after her."
Sam didn't say a word.
Janet felt panic spike hard in her chest. "Mr. Goodwin, I know Maddie hurt you before, but she really didn't betray you this time.
"She was set up. You don't know this, but the day after you kicked her out, someone used your name to sign her out of the hospital.
"I'm not just here to clear her name. I'm asking you to help me find her. I might be the Burke heiress, but my authority only goes so far. She's been missing for two days, and I don't even know if she's safe.
"Mr. Goodwin, please help her. Once she's back, if you're still angry, you can deal with her as you see fit. Right now, the only thing that matters is finding her."
Sam's stomach dropped when he heard again that Madison was missing and saw the desperation on Janet's face.
