When Benjamin heard Sam was flying back to Helvaria for Madison, he furrowed his brows, though his voice stayed polite.
"Mr. Goodwin, I can have a helicopter ready right away. But if we leave, what happens to the follow-up on Project ET?"
"I'm heading back. You stay and handle it," Sam replied. He never doubted Benjamin's abilities.
Benjamin hesitated for a beat, then nodded. "Understood. I'll take care of it right away."
He turned and headed off.
Janet watched him disappear into the distance, an unreadable expression flickering in her eyes. Sam looked calm enough, but from what he had said, she caught a hint of resentment toward Madison.
And honestly, Janet understood. If she hadn't grown up with Madison and seen who she really was, she would have been sick of her, too, after everything she had pulled over the years.
The helicopter was prepped in no time.
That afternoon, Sam and Janet flew back to Helvaria, and they didn't reach Ardelisse until the next day. Because of the time difference, it was still daylight when they landed.
As they walked out of the airport, Sam shot Janet a glance and said, cold as ever, "Ms. Burke, this is where we part."
"Huh?" Janet was stunned. By the time it clicked, Sam was already striding toward a Maybach waiting by the curb.
She hurried after him. "Mr. Goodwin, wait!"
Sam slid into the car and turned his head. "Do you need something, Ms. Burke?"
"Mr. Goodwin, you're going to deal with Maddie's situation, right? Can I come with you?"
Janet looked at him, tense and anxious. She rarely approached Sam on her own, but Madison had been missing for too long, and the tight knot of fear wouldn't let go.
He must have picked up on it and let out a hum. "Take the car behind us."
"Thank you, Mr. Goodwin." After thanking him, Janet shut Sam's door for him, then slid into the second car.
His attitude didn't faze her. She had known since she was little that Sam only ever softened for Madison. Everyone else received the same cold treatment, no matter who they were.
When they got back to Northcrest Villa, Brett was already waiting in the living room.
The second Sam walked in, Brett stood from the couch and greeted him respectfully. "Mr. Goodwin."
