A few minutes later, Madison and Larissa were in the hospital garden. Madison sat in a wheelchair while Larissa pushed her slowly along the path.
These past few days, Madison had either been locked up in the mansion or lying in a hospital bed. She wanted a change of scenery, and maybe a walk would help her figure out what to do about her and Sam.
But as they neared the pond, a desperate male voice came from behind the bushes. "Emily, I know I messed up. I swear I won't ever let you down again. Can we start over?"
A woman's strained voice followed. "Jeremiah, do you really think a single apology is enough to erase all the damage you've done?"
Madison stiffened at her words.
The woman was right. How could a single apology erase what had been done?
Ever since Madison returned, she kept thinking that if she just admitted she was wrong and tried hard enough to treat Sam right, things with him could go back to how they had been.
But was that really true? She didn't even dare to think about the answer.
Just then, the woman's voice sounded again. "Stop pestering me, Jeremiah. Your mistakes have cost us an innocent life. We can never go back."
A woman in her 20s stepped out from the bushes. She glanced at Madison and Larissa, then quickly walked away.
Her words sent Madison's thoughts spiraling again.
Madison's mistakes had cost them an innocent life too—Sam's life.
Had Madison been wrong to come back and cling to him?
Her emotions felt like a tangled mess all of a sudden. She didn't feel like strolling anymore. "Larissa, take me back."
