Chapter 143

Chapter 143

“Mr. Sterling, what brings you to our show today?” the reporter asked.

In the video that everyone had sent her, Sierra saw a young reporter holding a microphone, with a thin, gaunt couple standing beside him.

The couple looked nervously at the camera, and the next second, they suddenly burst into tears. It was David and Elouise.

Elouise held up her husband’s terminal lung cancer report and said, “We’re just simple folks from a rural town in Genova County.

“A few years back, my daughter got into Northbel University, and after that, she completely cut us off. Recently, my husband started having chest pains, and then we found out it was terminal cancer.

“We’re not asking our daughter to cover his medical bills or anything. We just hope she’ll come and say goodbye to her father one last time.”

Then, the reporter chatted with David and Elouise about their daughter’s past, trying to figure out if there was some kind of misunderstanding between them.

Elouise put on her most innocent act for the camera. “Our girl is beautiful and smart, always catching the eye of her male teachers. We’re just simple folks from a remote village, not much education.

“Maybe she thought we were embarrassing, so after she started middle school, she got all rebellious. She’d run around with those rowdy city kids and sometimes wouldn’t come home all night.”

Elouise let out a long sigh. “She went off to school in the city on her own, and we didn’t find out about all this until much later. Her dad was so mad that he actually fainted.

“After that, he really let her have it. He was so angry, he didn’t know his own strength, and that’s when she got mad at us.”

The scene shifted, and David looked straight into the camera, regret written all over his face. “Baby, I shouldn’t have been so rough on you back then. You’ve been gone for so many years now. Is your anger gone yet?”

The reporter was clearly touched and couldn’t help but say something from the heart before finally asking. “Do you know where your daughter is now? And what’s her name?”

Elouise nodded, jumping in, “She’s working at a zoo right now. Her name is $ierra.”

As the video played on, the next shot showed the reporter, David, and Elouise standing at the entrance of WonderWild Zoo.

The reporter tried to go in, but Ryan blocked his way.

Ryan said, “Do you think you can just see Sierra whenever you feel like it? You all look aggressive and up to no good.

“If you’ve got an appointment, you can come in. If not, even if you crawl in on all fours, I won’t let you get anywhere near

this zoo.”

With no other option, the reporter ended up having to call Sierra directly.

Sierra’s voice came through, cold as ice. “I’m not accepting any visitors right now.” Then, with a sharp click, she hung up. The video ended abruptly right there.

The video was ten minutes long and got posted on Twitter and all the major short video apps.

Overnight, it pulled in 150,000 likes on Twitter, and on the video platforms, views blew past a million!

Chapter 143

‘The comments section was blowing up:

[No way, is this really the Sierra I know? How could she be so awful?]

[Seriously, can’t she just let it go? They’re her parents. Her dad’s got cancer, and she’s humiliating him in the hospital. handing him two bucks.]

[How can someone who loves animals be so heartless?]

[Lol, they’re not even Sierra’s real parents. Why hit her up just because they’re sick now?]

[Still, the people who raised her did so much for her. Isn’t raising someone more important than just being related?]

[Sierra’s such an ingrate.]

Even after Sierra left the entertainment scene, her popularity was still off the charts, right up there with the hottest celebrities.

Especially after Henry saw the video, he immediately had people take it down.

But the show wasn’t backing down. They kept riding the wave, dropping ten more videos, all claiming they were just innocent victims being set up by big money interests.

Seeing the show stand their ground, justice-minded netizens instantly switched sides, rallying behind the show. All of Sierra’s social media accounts were getting absolutely roasted with hate comments.

Henry watched the show self-destruct and was so angry he almost burst out laughing.

He thought, ‘Neither the show nor that reporter could even get the basics of journalism right, and now they’re playing the victim just because their video got pulled?’

Henry said sharply over the phone, “I don’t care what secrets you’re hiding. Just listen to that reporter. What a load of crap! And she dares to comment on Sierra? Does she even know the real story?

“We’re not just suing you; we’re holding her accountable, too. Anyone out there spreading rumors or fanning the flames, none of you are getting away with it.”

Henry was seriously pissed. He remembered seeing Sierra when she first started college; even the smallest shirt looked baggy on her, and her face was so gaunt she barely looked like herself.

When she moved into the dorm, she didn’t even have a suitcase, just two tiny duffel bags that held everything she owned.

‘If David was really as loving as he acted in that video, how could Sierra have ended up looking so underfed? Henry thought. ‘And now they’re trying to guilt-trip her on top of everything?’

Finally, Henry couldn’t take it anymore. He jumped on Twitter and publicly called out the show.

Henry: [Do you guys even have any decency? Are you just letting any random person onto your show? Do you even check if any of this is true? Just because you call Sierra, she’s supposed to drop everything and say yes to your interview?

[I’ve watched Sierra grow up these past few years. I even think of her as my own daughter. I’m putting my reputation on the line here. Sierra is nothing like what you’re saying.)

After Henry finished posting, he stopped paying attention to Twitter and started urging the people in charge to hurry up and do something about it.

Before long, when folks online tried to check the show’s Twitter again, they saw a big red exclamation mark and a warning: [Account suspended for breaking the rules and spreading rumors.]

Chapter 143

Some people still weren’t convinced, so they headed over to the video app to check out the show’s account there. The platform had straight-up wiped their account off the map.

[Damn, Sierra’s backing is insane.]

[Honestly, those two don’t look like good people at all. They go on and on about loving their daughter and just wanting Sierra to spend her dad’s last three months with him, but if that’s the case, why are they calling her a delinquent?)

[Yeah, Sierra was all alone studying in the city. Of course, she’d be dazzled by the city lights at first, but come on. She still got into Northbel University.]

[You really buy what those two are saying? Sierra’s honestly got it tough.]

[What’s up with this? Is there some hidden drama going on here or what?]

The user defending Sierra went by the name Safe Journey. When people clicked into her profile, they saw she was just a middle-aged woman from a rural town, and she’d uploaded more than five thousand videos.

No way she was some kind of bot or paid shill. People asked her under her account.

[Madam, can you tell Sierra more? She really wants to hear it.]

[Miss, what do you mean? Please, explain.]

Safe Journey got a bunch of replies under her comment, but after she posted, she never responded again.

Half an hour later, just when everyone was about to call it a night, thinking Safe Journey was done for the day, she went out of her way to post a brand new video with text and pictures.

Safe Journey: [David is from our village, and Sierra is his daughter. But David constantly beat her and refused to give her food. If any of us tried to give Sierra something to eat, he’d threaten us.

[So, most folks in the village were too scared to openly give Sierra food, and that’s why she ended up severely undernourished and frail ever since she was little.

[David was a heavy smoker, a drunk, and a gambler. He almost had his hand chopped off once, and when he couldn’t pay his debts, he tried to pawn Sierra off to pay his gambling debts.

[She was only seven or eight at the time. He even wanted to hand her over to some creepy old guy, but Hank, the village chief, stepped in and stopped him.

[And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Every time Sierra begged to go to school, David would beat her for it.

[Things hit rock bottom when Sierra was in middle school. David went so far as to stab her in the stomach with a shattered bottle. Things got so out of hand that the cops had to step in.]
