Chapter 167

Chapter 167

55 vouche’s

Harborty Zoo had more than thirty sections. While it was impossible to see them all in just one afternoon, no one would settle for visiting only two.

Sierra glanced at Richard, who was all smiles, and said, “Mr. Lane, I don’t want to take up any more of your time these days.

“I’m here to learn from you all, so my partner and I will just explore on our own for the next two days. Time’s short, so we’ll try to see as much as we can. Does that sound good to you?”

Richard’s smile stayed firmly in place.

Richard nodded without hesitation. “If you’d like to explore on your own, I fully support that. Just let us know if you need anything during your visit.”

Sierra looked at Richard’s face, still feeling a bit uneasy.

But since he hadn’t done anything to offend her, Sierra couldn’t let it show and just gave a slight nod.

Back in their room, Sierra spread out the zoo map and started working with Sophie to figure out how they could check out every animal in Harborty Zoo over the next two days.

Even though Richard still made her feel a bit uneasy, Sierra had to admit that Harborty Zoo really did have plenty worth learning from.

Someone knocked on the door again.

Mocha’s voice piped up from outside, “Sierra, Sierra, are you in there? I came to see you again!”

Sierra and Sophie exchanged exasperated glances.

It seemed like Mocha had snuck out again.

Sierra headed to the door and opened it.

Mocha padded in on all fours, quickly sniffed out the bed that smelled like Sierra, and plopped down on it, looking all sweet and well-behaved.

Mocha stared at Sierra with a hopeful look. “Sierra, the keeper gave me a bath today! I smell so nice and I didn’t roll around on the floor at all. Let me sleep with you tonight, okay? I’ll keep you safe!”

With that, Mocha burrowed under Sierra’s blanket, squirmed around for a bit, and finally poked its furry head out at the edge of the bed. “The zoo is super scary at night. I promise I’ll keep you safe.”

Sierra scooped Mocha up from the bed.

She didn’t really get what Mocha meant, but still said, “You sneaked out again. Your keeper is gonna freak out if she finds

out.”

Mocha shivered at the mention of her keeper, and then muttered under her breath, “She’s not gonna care at all.”

If Sierra hadn’t been here today, Mocha would’ve been totally doomed.

Mocha pouted. “I didn’t sneak out on purpose. I was just really, really hungry.”

“Hungry?” Sierra echoed.

She looked at Mocha’s chubby little body and honestly couldn’t see any sign that this little fluffball was starving.

“I’m not lying to you!” Mocha huffed, puffing up her cheeks. “The keeper’s food is just

don’t intere

pandas should be eating big, sweet, crunchy apples, and those yummy cookies you gave me today?”

It thought, “The food they offer us is just totally terriblet

Mocha didn’t notice Sierra’s frown and kept rambling on. “Mom says I’m just too picky, but I really can’t stand that wa mushy stuff that gets stuck in my throat,

“So I have to sneak out and use my cuteness to earn some treats!”

Too bad hardly anyone ever stayed at the hotel here.

Whenever someone did show up, all they had to do was act cute, let people cuddle and lift them up, and they got definows snacks they’d never had before.

As Mocha kept rambling on, Sierra’s frown only deepened.

When Mocha finally quieted down, Sierra asked, “So you’re saying you guys hardly ever get to eat frite a bow the other animals?”

“I don’t know,” Mocha said, shaking its head. “I’ve never even seen any of the other animals. I’ve been here ever since I was

born.”

Since she couldn’t get any more info, Sierra just sent a message to the hotel staff so they’d know Mocha was with her

Mocha really wanted to sleep with her, so Sierra let her stay for the night

Before bed, Sierra asked the staff to bring over some sliced apples, and Mocha gobbled them up in just a few bines.

Mocha was a heavy sleeper. By the time Sierra and Sophie finished washing up and came out, it was just starting to get dark and Mocha was already sprawled out on the bed, snoring away.

Its soft, golden fur revealed the delicate pink skin underneath.

Sierra couldn’t help but remember that saying about felines always being on guard, even when they were sleeping

But listening to Mocha’s loud snores, Sierra just couldn’t hold back her laughter.

The next morning, Sierra took the sleepy Mocha back to its section before the zoo opened.

The keeper was clearly annoyed, but didn’t dare say a word.

Mocha seemed to sense that Sierra was someone powerful. It’d been a bit timid at first, but when it saw the keeper was even more nervous than it was, it strutted into its section with its head held high and waved goodbye to Sierra.

“Sierra, I’m coming to sleep with you again tonight, okay?” Mocha called out.

Sierra gave Mocha a gentle pat on the head. “I bet you just want more apples.”

Mocha’s eyes went wide in surprise.

Wow, humans are so smart! I didn’t even say anything! Mocha thought, totally floored.

With Mocha watching in amazement, Sierra left the red panda section and started her inspection, following the route sheid mapped out the day before.

Unlike regular visitors, Sierra and Sophie had access to the restricted areas of the zoo.

Everyone at Harborty Zoo already knew Sierra was here for an exchange visit, so whenever she went in to do her

inspections, no one ever stopped her.

Some tourists who were standing nearby watched as Sierra and Sophie chatted with the zoo staff, and then the staff just opened the gate for them.

Next thing they knew, Sierra was casually patting a tiger on the head, getting a hippo to open wide so she could check its teeth, and even making a cheetah purr like a cat.

Tourists were all stunned.

They said, “Hey, keeper, what’s the deal? How come they’re allowed to pet all the fluffy animals and we can’t?

“Yeah, do you guys have some secret service or something? Money’s not a problem. Let me in on it!”

Two bald dudes rocking thick gold chains totally lost it when they saw Sierra scratching a cheetah behind the ears.

They were green with envy, for real.

Cheetahs always look so majestic, but no one would’ve guessed they could be this downright adorable.

The zookeeper never expected things to get so heated over this.

He forced a smile, glancing at the cheetah acting all sweet like a kitten. “Sir, this cheetah was just rescued and brought in by our director last week. None of our keepers has even dared to get close to it yet.”

“Bullshit!” the bald guy protested, totally unconvinced. “Seriously? Look at it. It’s just an oversized housecat! What, does it only pick favorites and go for pretty girls instead of unique handsome guys like us?”

The zookeeper was speechless.

He just couldn’t deal with it anymore.

“Sir, not everyone’s Sierra Sterling. Those two ladies are animal experts from Amberty, here for an inspection and to learn from us. There’s really no secret service or anything,” the zookeeper explained.

He thought, ‘If there was some secret service, Mr. Lane would’ve advertised it everywhere by now. No way he’d keep it hidden.’

The two bald guys still looked skeptical, but all they could do was watch Sierra keep petting the cheetah, their eyes practically popping out of their heads.

Inside the glass section, Sierra had no idea what was going on outside.

She’d never seen a live cheetah before, so she couldn’t help but come over for a closer look.

The cheetah she was examining was Sarah, a three-year-old female, already an adult. It’d only just been rescued, so it was extremely thin, but remarkably docile.

Probably because it’d just been brought in, Sarah was in pretty rough shape. Its back had some festering wounds, and according to Sarah, one of its eyes was blinded by an injury. Its ribs were clearly visible beneath its belly.

‘It’s way too skinny!’ Sierra thought, her heart aching for the poor thing.

“Sarah, you really need to eat more. You’re way too skinny,” Sierra said, her face full of worry as she told the keeper to bring the food over.

Sarah snuggled up against Sierra’s leg, looking totally unimpressed. “Ugh, what’s the point? Might as well be dead!”

Right then, the keeper came in with three plucked chickens. Sarah’s nose picked up the scent, and before anyone could

blink, it tackled the keeper like a bolt of lightning.

The keeper broke out in a cold sweat and screamed like crazy.

Sarah just gave him a death stare, grabbed all three chickens in its mouth, and wolfed them down in seconds.

Finally stuffed, Sarah burped right in Sierra’s direction. “Hey, human, thanks. Finally got some actual meat in me today.”

Sierra immediately sensed something was off.

She sent the keeper away and quietly asked, “Sarah, have you really not had any meat since you got here?”

Sarah let out a low growl, its voice dripping with sarcasm. “Humans and their phony kindness. They dragged me out of the wild just to make money, and now all I get to eat is pig feed every single day!”

With those words, Sarah finally put the pieces together for Sierra.

It said, “All the animals here were basically kidnapped from the wild, and the reason that they end up so fat is because they’re fed pig feed.

“Just two days ago, I overheard that phony staff member on the phone, saying someone important was coming to inspect the zoo.

“He told the keeper to switch our food to real meat for now, but once the inspection’s over, it’s back to pig feed again.”

Sarah suddenly lifted its head, its amber eyes locked onto Sierra, filled with desperate hope. “I know you’re not like the others. You really care about us.

“Please, I’m begging you. Can you help me get back home? My babies are still out there on the prairie. I have to go back to them, no matter what!”
