Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

As soon as Natalie finished talking, the glass room went quiet. Sierra shot her a cold glare.

Over in the live chat, the discussion was lively.

[What’s Sierra’s problem? Mad that Natalie stepped in?]

[Poor Quickie. It’s already anxious. Eating is the only thing that helps but ca took its bowl.]

[Is the keeper just gonna stand there?]

[Natalie is awesome. She really had the nerve to call Sierra out just now. Go Natalie!]

Then everyone watching saw Sierra crouch down and call softly to Quickie.

Quickie hesitated at first, but at the sound of Sierra’s voice, it looked up obediently. Tears were glistening in its eyes.

Sierra patted its head gently. “No more snacks for you, Quickie.

“But… I could still eat,” Quickie said automatically.

“Didn’t you promise me you’d try to lose weight? Look at that belly. It’s practically dragging on the floor. How can you still be hungry?”

Quickie stared down at its round belly. Anxiety crept back. “But what if I get hungry later? What’ll I do then?”

Sierra paused, and then it clicked. After what the keeper had said earlier, she was putting it together. Quickie’s wings had been broken by its owner. With someone that cruel and moody, getting enough food must’ve been a constant struggle.

Quickie hopped onto Sierra’s shoulder and chirped right into her ear. Sierra understood what it was really saying. “My owner said birds have to be chubby to be cute. I was too skinny before, so the buyer returned me.

“When my owner couldn’t make money, he broke my wings and stopped feeding me. Now if I eat more, maybe people will

think I’m cuter.”

Sierra’s heart ached at Quickie’s words. A bitter pang spread through her chest. She took a deep breath and let Quickie hop into her hand.

Meeting its gaze, her eyes soft and pained, she said gently, “Quickie, you’re a bird. You don’t have to live by what humans think is cute. Eating should make you happy. It’s not something you do just to please someone else.”

Quickie froze, dark eyes shimmering with tears. It stared at Sierra, stunned. No one had ever told it that it could be adorable without being chubby. No one had ever said food was for enjoying, not just surviving or looking cuter.

Quickie hopped down, flapping its wings and circling excitedly around Sierra’s feet.

Everyone stared, totally floored.

Whenever Sierra talked to the animals, she took off her mic, so no one in the room or watching had a clue what she’d said to get Quickie so hyped.

But seeing Quickie bouncing around that happily, they knew that Sierra seriously had a way with birds.

The comments exploded. [Sierra is so gentle with the animals. It’s like she’s glowing or something.]

[Right? I thought I was the only one who noticed that.]

[Neither Sierra nor the zoo is entirely at fault. The zoo’s approach is to gradually reduce food, but its effectiveness is uncertain. Sierra, however, tackles the core issue directly. It’s cere how Quickie listens to her and now behaves differently.]

[Wait, you think Sierra can understand what Quickie’s saying?]

[Get real, man. Since when can people talk to animals?]

[You know, Natalie is kind of getting on my nerves. Sierra was just trying to help Quickie, but Natalie had to make a big scene and make it seem like Sierra was being cruel.]

[Are you kidding me? Natalie is just standing up for Quickic.]

Natalie felt horrible. She never saw this coming. One minute before, Quickie was a nervous wreck plucking its feathers; the next, it was hopping around Sierra like nothing happened, not even caring about its food.

Natalie knew that netizens were definitely going to twist her words into something ugly.

Putting on a polite smile, Natalie turned to Sierra. “Sierra, how did you do that? Can you teach me?” she asked, unable to hide her frustration. “Angel behaves for me, but it never really connects. I wish it could be as playful as Quickie.”

Both Sierra and Quickie looked over. Sierra stayed quiet, but Quickie tilted its head, as if sizing Natalie up, and then scurried right toward her.

Natalie’s eyes lit up. She wondered, ‘Wait, does it actually like me’ Playing along, she crouched down and let Quickie hop onto her hand, and then climb up to her shoulder.

But something felt off. Quickie started scrambling all over her, scratching her ear so hard that it stung, but Natalie didn’t dare move. Then it planted itself right on top of her head, chirping loudly like it owned the place.

Just then, the livestream camera swung toward her. Natalie’s heart sank. She felt something warm and wet drip down her forehead onto her face.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Shawn’s horrified expression. She didn’t need to look. She knew exactly what happened. Quickie had just pooped on her head. Her face turned dark with rage.

Quickie knew it was in trouble. It jumped off Natalie’s head and scrambled back to Sierra, where it chirped loudly at Natalie, and then clearly said in a human voice, “Dumbass, buzz off!”
