Chapter 205 The Squirrel’s Warning
Felix was just too straightforward for his own good.
Emery knew that, and he wasn’t blaming Felix for it.
But he couldn’t help admiring those city experts.
He thought, ‘They’ve made it here in eight hours. That kind of speed would put them near the top, even among the Forestry Bureau’s best.’
So the wildlife rescue team soon realized Emery was being extra warm to them. He was so eager, it looked like he’d personally pour coffee straight into their mouths if he could.
After a few minutes of rest, Sierra and Sophie were back to normal.
The second half of the trek took them higher up the mountain, with steep slopes and cliffs dropping straight down right next to them. One wrong step and it was a long way down. So they couldn’t afford to lose focus for even a second. Leaning against a big rock, Sophie glanced at Timothy and Alex, who were still struggling to catch their breath, and said to Sierra, “This is just like those long marches we used to do in the army.”
Sierra turned her head to look at her.
Sophie grinned and said, “Back then, we had to run more than 60 miles in a single day.”
Sierra drew in a sharp breath.
She thought, ‘That’s crazy.’
After resting for a few minutes, Emery showed up with the local wildlife rescue team.
He repeated what he’d said on the phone, then added, “We’ve found out the white tiger is a male. He’s carrying the cub in his mouth, which means he most likely got separated from the mother. There’s also a chance the mother is already dead.”
As soon as he said that, the whole wildlife rescue team’s faces grew even more serious.
Emery gestured to show just how tiny the cub was. It was probably only about two months old. Without its mother’s milk, the little guy wouldn’t survive in the wild.
Emery said, “Even though these mountains are supposed to be a wilderness area, villagers from down below have always come up here, not just to set traps, but to hunt as well.
“In the past ten years, our team has taken apart more than three hundred traps, and three of our own got caught and lost their lives.”
It was impossible to stop this kind of thing. They couldn’t exactly put a camera on every tree.
With all these dangers lurking in the mountains, they had to find the male white tiger and his cub, no matter what.
Sierra said, “We’ve rested enough. Let’s head out.”
She’d already scoped out the area. The tiger’s tracks were still fresh, so they could still track it.
Emery replied, “Alright, some of our guys and the local experts are already out there looking, but there’s still no word from them.”
Even though the white tiger was hurt, it could still run like the wind.
Plus, this tiger was sharp. It knew exactly how to vanish without a trace.
After Sierra got the lowdown on the situation and wolfed down a bowl of slightly undercooked instant noodles, she and others set off again.
This time, the group was much bigger. Everyone on the mountain joined in.
Since they were heading into unexplored territory and the mountain weather could turn snowy and unpredictable, Felix would tie a strip of bright red cloth to a tree every few dozen miles, just in case they lost their way.
After about an hour of hiking, Sierra suddenly caught the sound of chittering coming from above.
She glanced up to spot a little squirrel with bright yellow fur and a huge, fluffy tail.
The squirrel stood on the branch, its tiny paws tucked against its chest.
When it saw Sierra looking its way, its eyes sparkledd in techcrumbled down the trunk of a nearby tree.
It said, “Wow, I finally get to see a human.”

Squirrels were incredibly quick and wary. People loved them, but hardly anyone ever managed to keep one as a pet. Even if

one had one at home, chances were one’d barely get to touch it.
So when the squirrel showed up and even climbed right onto Sierra’s shoulder, everyone’s eyes lit up
After all, who wouldn’t want to pet a soft, fluffy little squirrel?
Everyone was staring at Sierra, eyes wide and full of longing.
All the animals loved Sera just like everyone online said. And seeing it happen for real, it was clear the rumors were true.
Of course, the squirrel had no clue about what people said online. It just saw a bunch of humans passing by, and one of them. Sierra, was shining with golden light.
The squirrel cocked its head and chirped. “Hey, pretty lady, I think your friends fell into a big pit and can’t get out. There’s so much blood. You guys need to hurry and save them!”
Serras expression tumed serious. She let the squirrel hop into her palm and asked urgently, “How many people are down
there?”
The squirrel ducked its head, scratching at its ear, a little embarrassed. It said, “Sorry, I’m just a squirrel. I don’t really know numbers. But it’s a huge pit, and there’s a whole bunch of people stuck inside.”
Sierra turmed to Emery and asked, “How many people were in the group that went after the white tiger?”
Emery replied, “Six.”
“Do they have satelite phones with them?’ Sierra asked.
Emery gave a wry smile and said, “Our Forestry Bureau’s budget is a joke. We can’t afford fancy stuff like that. But there’s a tourist spot nearby, so if we wander around a bit, maybe we can catch a weak signal
As he said that, he pulled out his phone, only to see zero bars.
Emery started to get anxious, swallowing hard. He said, “There’s no way something bad happened, right? We’ve taken this trail a hundred times!
Plus, our team left markers all along the way!
When Emery said that, it all clicked for Sierra. She instantly understood what was happening.
She let the squirrel hop back onto the branch, then pulled out a handful of pine nuts from her pocket. She asked, “Hey, little guy, can you show us the way?”
Everyone from the Forestry Bureau just stared in disbelief.
They thought. Has Sierra lost her mind? Is she seriously trusting a squirrel that doesn’t even look that smart to guide us?
But to everyone’s surprise, the moment the squirrel saw all those pine nuts, its eyes lit up like little lanterns.
It thought, Whoa, a whole fistful of pine nuts! I’d have to shell nuts for ages to get this many.
Humans are way too generous.”
It said, “Hey, human, could you wait for me? I wanna stash these pine nuts you gave me in my den first.”
As it spoke, it started cramming nuts into its mouth, clutching as many as it could in both paws, just like a little person hoarding snacks.
But then, the squirrel suddenly realized: with its paws stuffed full, there was no way it could climb the tree.
So, looking super reluctant, it almost pouted as it put the pine nuts back down where they were.
Sierra couldn’t help but laugh. She said, “Alright, here’s the deal: help us find those people, and I’ll keep your pine nuts safe for you. Once we’re done, I’ll hand them right back.”
The little squirrel really trusted Sierra.
At her words, it instantly squeaked, “Okay!”
The little squirrel was so thrilled it grinned from ear to ear, but as soon as it did, half the pine nuts stuffed in its cheeks spilled everywhere.
Sierra was speechless.
The squirrel froze, eyes wide in disbelief.
It wailed inwardly, “No! My precious pine nuts.’
Seeing the little guy on the verge of tears, Sierra quickly soothed it. She said, “Hey, don’t be sad. I’ve got loads more pine nuts for you, promise.”
The squirrel’s eyes couldn’t hide its heartbreak over the lost pine nuts. It thought, ‘No way I’m leaving those behind. As

soon as this is over, I’m coming back for every last one.’
Noticing Sierra was in a hurry, the squirrel let it go and stopped worrying about the nuts.
The squirrel leapt up into the tree and chirped, “Come on, just follow me!”
Sierra glanced at everyone and said, “Follow it.”
Everyone from the Forestry Bureau was still a bit doubtful, but when they saw that Ethan and the others were totally on board, they followed, too.
After about twenty minutes, they noticed the red cloth markers their teammates had put up had suddenly vanished.
Then, they heard a dog barking nearby and some weak calls for help.
Everyone shot each other a look, then bolted toward the direction of the voices.
Sure enough, not even 160 feet ahead, a huge pit, about 9 feet wide and over 3 feet deep, loomed right in front of them.
All six people were hurt to some degree, thanks to the trap.
But the only one who was totally fine was a dog wearing a down jacket.
The moment the dog saw Sierra, its eyes sparkled with excitement.
The dog said, “Way to go, little squirrel! You actually brought such a beautiful lady to save me!”
