Chapter 271

Sierra’s words got caught in her throat, unable to come out or go back down.

She fell completely silent.

Bessa, being a first-time mom, didn’t notice anything off. It even threw Sierra a glance and asked with all seriousness, “Sierra, do you think I’m right?”

Sierra took a few deep breaths, clenched her fist, and gave Bessa gentle, bewildering, but totally harmless bop on the head.

Bessa’s eyes squinted shut from the bop, instantly turning it into areaction meme.

Outside, the staff spoke in the local language, shooting nervous glances at Sierra, and then at Harley, who was sweating

bullets.

“Harley, is it really okay for Sierra to do that?” one of the staff asked.

Harley hesitated. “Uh… I guess it’s probably fine?”

Harley glanced into the glass enclosure, thinking to herself, ‘After Sierra went in, Bessa even started acting all cuddly with

her.

‘When Sierra playfully tapped it on the head, Bessa didn’t even react aggressively. Now it’s just looking at Sierra, totally baffled, and even let out a little meow.

Bessa looked and sounded totally lost and puzzled.

It was like Bessa was asking Sierra, “Hey, why’d you suddenly bop me?”

Harley just saw Sierra give a resigned look, then reach out to rub Bessa’s big head and say something in her native tongue.

Harley had no idea what she was saying.

But soon, Bessa’s eyes gradually became clear and bright.

Then Sierra scooped up all the cubs from the corners, shot Bessa a serious look, and said, “Bessa, just chill and lie down. Your babies don’t even have teeth yet. How could they possibly eat meat

t the moment they’re born?”

Bessa showed off its sharp teeth, totally confused. “So what do they eat then? They can’t just starve, right? Are baby cubs really that hardcore?”

Bessa couldn’t help but think back to its own cub days.

But after thinking for ages, all it could remember was that its first successful hunt was a baby antelope,

‘Wait, was I like that when I was a cub, too?’ Bessa wondered.

Bessa’s eyes sparkled with pride, and it couldn’t help but admire itself even more.

Sierra glanced at Bessa and could tell right away that it was totally off in its own world.

“Even wild grass needs rain to grow, so how could desert lion cubs be any different?” Sierra sighed quietly, like a mom teaching her kid her first lesson about life.

“She said seriously, “After you give birth, you’ll start making milk The cubs need your milk to survive.”

With that, Sierra gave each of the four little desert lion cubs a gentle pat on the butt.

The cubs were squeaking nonstop. Just a few days ago, their eyes were still shut tight, but now their faces had grown out, and their eyes were way bigger now.

Right now, these little desert lions were basically just like human babies. They couldn’t really communicate with Sierra yet.

But drinking milk was just something they knew how to do instinctively. So when Sierra gave their butts a little pat, the cubs waddled over to Bessa, tails wagging.

But just as they latched onto Bessa’s nipples, ready to be nursed, Bessa sent them flying with a kick of its paw.

The cubs yelped in pain.

Sierra was speechless..

Bessa stammered, “I swear, I didn’t do it on purpose! I’m just not used to this yet, and I instinctively sent them flying.”

Sierra didn’t know what to say.

Luckily, with Sierra’s hands-on teaching, Bessa finally started getting the hang of nursing its cubs.

Bessa had been slurping fish soup and pork stew lately, so its milk supply was off the charts. The four cubs guzzled milk until their tummies were stuffed, and then passed out like little logs.

But Sierra still couldn’t stop worrying.

She was about to return to Hustralia, and there were a ton of things she needed to make sure were taken care of before she left.

So for the past few days, Sierra had been showing up at the rescue center every day.

gathered all the desert lions together and showed them, again and again, how to take care of

She didn’t just teach Bessa. She gat their cubs, one step at a time.

Joy lay next to Weston, its eyes locked on Sierra, soaking up every word. It was way more focused than any of the lionesses.

‘Desert lions aren’t known for being brainy, but I’m the exception. Joy thought. ‘If our pride’s gonna make a comeback, it’s all on me. I’ve gotta nail this.

‘As the future boss, I’m not just responsible for the pride’s safety. I’ve gotta look out for the females and the cubs, too.

After seven days, Sierra had pretty much covered everything.

Wrapping up her final lesson, Sierra suddenly turned to Joy and asked, “Joy, did you catch all that?”

Joy froze for a second, and then gave a solemn, determined nod

Sierra gave Joy a rewarding pat on the head and said quietly, “It’s up to you to protect the desert lion pride from now on.”

Sierra had known right from the start that Joy was different,

Sierra was set to head back to Hustralia on the third day. After a grueling twenty-hour flight, she finally touched down in Amberty at exactly eight in the morning.

Even though Elliot had splurged on first-class tickets for their return trip, spending more than twenty hours cramped up in an airplane still left everyone completely wiped out.

Sierra immediately gave everyone the day off. After saying goodbye to Elliot, she went straight to Thomas to fill him in on everything that went down.

When Thomas saw how exhausted Sierra looked, he jumped in Sierra, you don’t have to push yourself so hard. You look like you haven’t slept in days. The report can wait. Go crash for a bit first, alright?”

Thomas couldn’t help but laugh. “If Henry saw you right now, held totally chew me out, saying I’m treating you like a robot.”

Sierra chuckled. “Mr. Monroe, you know how I am. I can’t chill until everything’s handled. Let me wrap things up first, and then I’ll actually get some rest.”

Thomas just shook his head, completely helpless.

“Seriously, I don’t even know what to say to you anymore. Just take care of yourself, okay? If you burn out, nothing’s getting done anyway,” he said.

But honestly, Thomas knew Sierra was never going to change. She was just way too driven to ever take it

Thomas let Sierra go, sending her on her way.

easy.

Instead of heading straight back to her dorm, Sierra swung by the security squad to bring Payton back with her.

Payton was basically the zoo’s MVP now. They couldn’t imagine unning things without it.

Sierra used to have no idea what the System meant by making Payton the security captain, but now it all made perfect sense.

When Sierra found Payton, it was on duty at the warehouse, sporting a black vest with custom lettering Thomas had printed for him.

On the left, it said “WonderWild Zoo”, on the right, “Security Captain”, and at the bottom, in tiny letters, “Payton”.

Payton even had a pair of dog sunglasses perched on its nose, locking like a total boss.

Sierra instinctively pulled out her phone and started snapping a bunch of photos of her dog.

Payton had a sixth sense for cameras. It immediately turned its head toward Sierra as soon as it felt someone was taking pictures of it.

At first, Payton thought it must be seeing things.

It went back to its duties, but something nagged at it, so it glanced back again. When it finally realized it was really Sierra standing there, its fluffy tail spun like a propeller, and it let out a soft, pleading whine.

It dashed over, its paws making a rapid patter on the ground, its voice almost breaking with emotion. “Sierra, is it really you? I’m not dreaming, am I?”

Payton stood up and nuzzled up to Sierra, tail wagging like crazy

As soon as it caught that familiar scent, Payton knew for sure it wasn’t dreaming.

After all, it could never smell Sierra in its dreams.

Sierra’s eyes grew moist as she looked at Payton. She rushed over and hugged it tightly, its voice trembling with emotion. “Payton, you’re not dreaming. I’m back. I came to take you home”

Payton nodded without even thinking.

Suddenly remembering something, Payton said, “Wait, Sierra, held on a sec.”

It trotted over to a security guard and another dog, calling out, Muddy, human, my master’s here to take me home! I’m not joining patrol with you guys today. Bye!

“And tomorrow… nope, I’m not working tomorrow either. From now on, I’m sticking with Sierra every single moment!”

As it said this, Payton felt a little choked

up

inside.

To be honest, Sierra didn’t spend much time with it.

Back when she was an actress, she’d take it with her, but later on, she stopped bringing it along.

Payton couldn’t understand human writing, but when Sierra was working in showbiz, it’d overhear the crew gossiping about her.

They’d say Sierra had a bad temper, acted all high and mighty, and hooked up with all sorts of men.

It didn’t really get what they were talking about, but it knew it wasn’t anything good, so it got so pissed that it ended up biting them.
