Chapter 290
Sierra wasn’t really shocked by this. She’d already guessed most of it. She just asked, “So, where’s Susan now?”

“Susan’s been in prison for half a year. If her info hadn’t been in our police database, we probably wouldn’t have tracked her down so fast,” Anderson explained.
‘Half a year ago?’ Sierra wondered.
The wildlife rescue team couldn’t help but remember what Linda had mentioned.
Kenny was adopted right around that time, too.
And considering how much Cesar treasured Kenny, it all seemed way too suspicious.
‘So, Kenny is actually Susan and Cesar’s child?’ they thought.
Even though nobody said it out loud, everyone was thinking the same thing. Anderson nodded. “That’s right. After Kenny’s mom went to prison, he ended up in an orphanage.
“Cesar had a mistress and a kid with her, but he was too scared to let Linda find out, so he had no choice but to adopt Kenny. But he kept Linda in the dark about Kenny’s real mom.
“He even made up a new identity for Kenny, and Linda totally believed it. She’s been fooled all this time and still doesn’t know the truth.”
Everything finally made sense.
Kenny was just a kid from the orphanage. This was the reason he called Cesar “Dad” the moment he saw him.
That wasn’t fate or some crazy coincidence. It was just Kenny blurting out the truth.
“What did Susan get arrested for?” Sierra asked.
“Child trafficking,” Anderson replied. “Susan was an accountant at a company, but behind the scenes, she was actually the ringleader of a child trafficking ring. She even trafficked one of her coworkers’ kids.
“She got busted during a trafficking operation six months ago, and she just took all the blame herself. Three months ago, she was sentenced to death. That’s why Cesar never got implicated.”
“Damn it!” Ryan muttered. “Cesar must be totally overwhelmed. His mistress took all the blame for him, even got the death
sentence.”
Cesar might not have truly loved Susan, but after she took the fall for him like that, that’s something Cesar would never be able to forget.

That’s also why he ended up indulging Kenny so much.
After hearing all this, Sierra said, “Based on what we’ve found so far, Cesar is definitely involved in child trafficking, and many of the victims are actually adults with intellectual disabilities. Our main goal now is to locate these people and rescue them first.
“The dog said it hadn’t seen any kids, but it did hear the sound of children crying from underground. Could the kids be hidden down there?”
As soon as Sierra pointed that out, everyone’s eyes widened in shock.
Ethan and Mark nodded. “That’s a real possibility.”

Ryan said, “Sierra, can you ask the dog which mine those people are hiding in? Let’s sneak down and see if we can find
them.”
The dog caught on right away and answered, “They’re mostly in Mine One and Mine Two.”
Sierra nodded, then turned to the group and pulled some snack from her miner’s uniform pocket. Speaking softly, she said, “We’re heading down into the mines soon. Could you help us check out what’s going on up here?”
F
“You can count on us!” the dog answered.
The big dog wanted to bark, but remembered Richie and Penny warning about staying quiet so the security guards wouldn’t notice. So, it just whimpered softly. “If Cesar lets anyone hurt you, I’ll bite them for you.”
Sierra didn’t want them risking their lives. “Don’t put yourselves in danger. Just listen to Richie, alright?”
Richie would blend in with the other dogs, ready to distract the humans and buy the team some time if anything happened. Penny, meanwhile, would head down to sniff around and see if i could catch any trace of children.
Once Sierra finished giving out orders, the crew geared up to head down into the mines.
Nobody was in Mine One and Mine Two, but a faint light still flickered around the tunnel entrances.
As they were getting ready to rappel down into the mines, Elliot suddenly came running over.
Sierra was shocked to see him. “Why are you here?”
“How could I not come?” Elliot gave Sierra a reassuring look. “The meeting went smoothly. An hour ago, Leonard took Cesar to a hotel down the mountain for dinner. They won’t be back for a while.”
“And you…” Sierra asked.
“I hopped out halfway. Leonard will cover for me,” Elliot said, and let out a sigh. “I was worried about you and Sophie. This whole thing is risky, and with just a few cops outside plus Anderson, it just didn’t feel safe enough.”
Elliot thought Anderson didn’t exactly inspire confidence. He was supposed to be the cop, but in the end, it was Sierra running the whole show.
Anderson caught Elliot’s not-so-subtle glance and shrugged.
Before anyone could say a word, Elliot cut in, “Besides, I had to come. I haven’t spent my life underground, but I’ve been down there enough times. I know my way around better than any of you, so this time, you’re following my lead.”
Sierra remembered Elliot had a few mines out in Afrino.
They were totally clueless about mines, so Elliot’s help was a must. Sierra agreed.
Seeing that, Elliot went around and double-checked everyone’s ropes himself, making sure they were all set before giving the green light to head down.
At first, the mine was narrow, but the deeper they went, the more the tunnel widened out.
The mine was a maze of tunnels, and sometimes they’d hit a dead end and have to backtrack.
After about ten minutes of wandering through the mine, Penny suddenly barked, “Sierra, I can smell people in here, and I think there are kids too!”
Sierra immediately asked, “Which way?”
“The scents in here are all mixed up. I can’t tell exactly where they are, but I’m sure there are people in this mine,” Penny

replied.
But the whole mine was empty, as if it had been abandoned. There was no sign of anyone at all.
Not even a trace of those adults with intellectual disabilities, the big dog talked about, could be found.
