Chapter 292
Inside Mine One, Ethan, Mark, and Alex were busy leading the miners out, and Sierra and the others were leaving Mine One.
The racket instantly caught the attention of the security guard on patrol. His flashlight beam snapped toward the noise as he headed over to check it out.
As soon as the guard reached Mine One, the first wave of police who had followed Sierra and the others were already waiting. They immediately raised their guns and shouted, “Police! Freeze! Hands on your head and get down on the ground.”
The guard turned ghostly pale. He had no clue what was happening, so he slowly raised his hands above his head. Hands on his head, he squatted down just like he was told.
Then, almost whining, he mumbled, “Officer, I swear, I’ve never broken the law in my whole life. I’m not a criminal.”
When Sierra came out of Mine One, she spotted the security guard in his uniform, squatting on the ground with his eyes wide and pleading.
Anderson stepped out just in time to hear the guard’s words. He strode over and said, “Whether you did anything or not, we’ll find out. For now, come with us to the station and tell us everything you know.”
Then, Anderson turned to Sierra. “Ms. Sterling, we’re truly grateful for your help. But we need you to stay here and let our officers handle Mine Two. It’s safer that way.”
He thought, ‘We’ve been warned that Mine Two was extremely dangerous. If anything happened to Ms. Sterling, how would I explain it to my superiors?’
“Anderson, I appreciate your concern, but right now, I’m the only one who knows where the people in Mine Two are. Time is running out. Every second counts. The sooner we find them, the more lives we can save,” Sierra said.
Ever since the rat said that Cesar’s men were planning to destroy the evidence, Sierra had been on edge. But she just couldn’t put her finger on what was wrong.
Anderson thought that Sierra had already gone above and beyond. Deep down, he just couldn’t bear the thought of Sierra getting hurt. But with so many lives hanging in the balance at Mine Two, he was really struggling inside.
Anderson gritted his teeth and said, “Alright, Ms. Sterling, you can join them. But you have to promise me you’ll keep yourself safe.”
Sierra nodded, promising. She had originally wanted Elliot to stay up here, but he insisted on going down with her.
“Sierra, don’t you realize I’d be worried out of my mind if you went down there? How could you just leave me up here all alone?” Elliot said, clutching his chest.
Sierra was speechless. Her mind immediately flashed back to that dream she’d had. Realizing her mind was wandering, she quickly shook her head and shot Sophie a pleading look, hoping she’d talk some sense into Elliot.
Surprisingly, Sophie just said, “Elliot, if you want to go down, that’s fine. Just don’t slow us down. Alright?”
Elliot’s eyes lit up, and he gave Sophie a playful salute. “Yes, my dear sister-in-law.” With that, he happily dashed over behind Sierra and helped her tie the rope.

The newly arrived police joined Anderson and made their way down into Mine Two. A group of rats had gathered in the tunnel. Spotting Sierra, they immediately scurried over to her.
“Could you lead the way?” Sierra asked.
The rats squeaked in response. One of them said, scurrying ahead, “No problem. It’s a bit of a trek, so stick close and don’t fall behind.”
Mine Two was huge underground, almost completely mined out They spent an hour winding their way through its narrow tunnels, past scattered old mine carts. The air was hot and stifling, soaking everyone in sweat within minutes.
