Chapter 294
Up top at the mine, the rescue team was already in place, and specialists were scanning the ground with thermal imaging. The police had been trying to reach the people trapped inside.
Just as they thought all hope was gone, Anderson’s voice suddenly came through the walkie-talkie after a barrage of crackling static.
One officer shouted, “Chief, the walkie-talkie’s back online!”
Before the police chief could react, Ethan rushed over and grabbed the walkie-talkie. “Sierra, Sophie, are you guys hurt? What about Anderson and Elliot? Are they alright?”
After a moment, there was some rustling on the walkie-talkie, like someone was shifting around.
Finally, Sierra picked up the walkie-talkie. “Ethan, relax. All four of us and the two kids are fine, and we can still move around. We’re safe for now.
“But the way out is blocked, and we have no clue what’s happening outside. I only have a limited amount of food and water in my backpack. It’ll barely last us three days, tops. Any idea when the rescue team will get here?”
Ethan glanced at the rescue team leader.
The leader quickly said, “Ms. Sterling, please don’t worry. We’re still investigating Tunnel Two. Right now, the most important thing is to pinpoint your location. Once we do, we’ll access the ventilation shafts and send our people down to get you.”
Just then, a rescue team member came over. “Captain, we can’t locate the people trapped inside with thermal imaging.”
Ethan’s expression changed. “How could it be?”
The team member said, “Maybe the ground’s just too thick, and our equipment isn’t strong enough to get through.”
Before he could finish, the leader gave him a sharp look, and he immediately shut up.
The leader then said, “Ms. Sterling, please trust us. We have plenty of other equipment, and we will definitely find you. You and everyone down there are strong heroes.
“No matter what, we won’t give up. The rescue team will be working nonstop, and we’ll do everything we can to get you out within three days.”
Sierra knew deep down this rescue mission was going to be hell. The death rate in a mine collapse like this is almost ninety- nine percent. Almost no one ever makes it out alive.
Sierra took a deep breath and said, “Okay.”
The police chief stepped forward. “Ms. Sierra Sterling, please rest assured. The police will never give up on you. Cesar has been arrested, and the victims have been taken to headquarters. Once we confirm their identities, we’ll let their families take them home.”
Sierra replied, “That’s good to hear. By the way, there’s something fishy about Cesar’s child trafficking case.”
Before Sierra could say more, the walkie-talkie crackled with static again. The red light flickered a few times, then went out completely. It seemed to be completely broken.
Sierra looked at the silent walkie-talkie with a wry smile. “Well, died right when we needed it most, but at least now the police know we’re still alive.”
Anderson was terrified. He was just a rookie cop, fresh out of the academy, and he’d never faced anything like this. Truth was, he’d only held it together this long by putting on a brave face.
Now, he was on the verge of freaking out, but when he saw Sophie, Sierra, and Elliot just chilling as if nothing happened, he started wondering if maybe he was just being a wimp. ‘Wait, am really the police here?’ Anderson thought.
