Sophie and Sierra drove around, scouting the area for any clues.

Mount Kaelenridge was absolutely stunning, but since most of the region was a no-man’s land, almost nobody ever came out here.

In truth, Mount Kaelenridge boasted over three hundred glaciers that stretched on and on, their pristine snow blanketing the peaks. Everywhere one looked, it was just steep mountains and heaps of jet-black rocks scattered across the ground.

Strangely enough, on this barren plateau, aside from a huge, shaggy yak munching on tufts of grass wedged between the stones, there wasn’t a single Kaelenridge Sheep to be seen.

Noticing Sierra’s furrowed brow, Sophie couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong?”

Sierra replied, “It’s weird. This is supposed to be the breeding season for Kaelenridge Sheep, so it should be the easiest time to spot them.”

Kaelenridge Sheep were never easy to find, but Sierra had mapped her route based on their habits and the migration trails they always followed. Even so, she hadn’t seen a single one.

It didn’t seem like just bad luck; it was more like the Kaelenridge Sheep were actively hiding from something.

With that question still nagging at her, Sierra glanced over at the yak quietly munching on the grass nearby. She walked over, her gaze friendly and relaxed.

The yak in front of her was huge, and even more unusual. It was a rare white-haired yak.

Sierra thought for a moment, then called out, “Hey, big guy, mind if I ask you something?”

As soon as she finished, the yak suddenly stopped chewing and looked at her with aggrieved eyes.

Sierra stopped mid-sentence, looking a bit puzzled. She thought, ‘Did I say something wrong?”

With the System on her side, animals were always completely under her sway. She’d never had something like this happen. before.

Just as Sierra was about to apologize, the yak suddenly mooed, its voice carrying a thick accent. It said, “I’m a lady.”

Sierra was at a loss for words.

Cows were usually smaller than bulls, but this white yak was massive, with silky fur almost sweeping the ground. Standing in front of her, Sierra felt like a little action figure, so she just automatically assumed it was a bull.

After all, it was not like she could just walk over and check if it had balls or not.

She never expected to make such an embarrassing mix-up.

Sierra’s face flushed with embarrassment. She said, “Sorry about that. How about I call you Miss Yak?”

The yak let out a soft moo, clearly giving her approval.

The yak gazed quietly at Sierra, who felt as if a gentle, radiant glow surrounded her. Just being close made the yak feel utterly comfortable.

The yak thought, “This girl is drop-dead gorgeous, like a rose blooming in the garden. And she can actually talk to me. must be a goddess who came down to bless this yak spirit.

The yak stared at Sierra, eyes full of anticipation, practically buzzing with excitement. It thought, ‘Even if this girl called me a bull again today, I would totally let it slide

“Hey, beautiful girl, ask me anything you want,” the yak said.

Sierra breathed a sigh of relief and hurried to explain, “We’re with the Kaelenridge Sheep conservation team. Do you happen to know where the Kaelenridge Sheep herd is around here? We really need to talk to them about something important.”

The yak paused. When it spoke up, its tone was laced with anger. It said, “Humans are so strange. One minute, they say they’re here to protect us, the next, they’re out there killing us.

“Just a few days ago, the whole Kaelenridge Sheep herd got wiped out by humans.”

Sierra’s face went ghostly pale, her lips quivering. She murmured, “They’re dead?”

The yak said, “Yeah, tons of them. I was out grazing not long ago and saw Kaelenridge Sheep lying everywhere, all skinned. There were even a few calves, just little things, flopped on the ground trying to nurse.

“But their moms were all gone, no milk left for them. I wanted to help, but I didn’t have milk for them. All those poor calves could do was wait to die. Humans can be so heartless.”

Then, as if suddenly remembering Sierra was human, too, the yak quickly added, “Not you, though, pretty lady.”

Sierra was stunned. Now she finally understood why the Kaelenridge Sheep weren’t heading to Lake Sylvenmir to give birth. as they always did.

But the heartbreaking truth was that so many Kaelenridge Sheep had already died before she even arrived.

Sierra thought, ‘No wonder the Kaelenridge Sheep numbers are shrinking this year.

Sierra dragged Sophie back to the car, and they raced to the conservation station, waking up the wildlife crew and Quinn, who’d barely gotten any sleep.

When Quinn found out the Kaelenridge Sheep had been skinned and gutted by a poaching gang, he just broke down sobbing.

He choked out, “How could this happen? I didn’t even notice. Why didn’t I see it?”

Quinn had been watching over the Kaelenridge Sheep here with his dad since he was eighteen. Twenty years had flown by. and he always thought he’d kept them safe. But now, disaster had struck right under his nose.

Timothy clenched his fists, seething with rage. He seethed, “Damn it, these sons of bitches. Our country’s had anti-poaching laws for ages, and they still have the guts to poach out in broad daylight,”

For a moment, everyone was hit with a wave of helplessness.

There were so many animals suffering because of humans. Even though the team worked themselves to the bone, day and night, there was only so much they could do to save them.

The government had been fighting poachers for decades, but there were still plenty of gangs out there willing to risk their lives just for money.

And these people knew full well that no matter how many wild animals they killed, they’d never get the death sentence.

But the money they made from poaching was absolutely astronomical. That’s why so many people were willing to risk everything, just for a quick buck.

Sierra’s face grew cold as she struggled to keep her anger under control.

She glanced at everyone and said, “Guys, we’re dealing with a dangerous, vicious poaching gang this time. We have no ideal how many of them are out there, so let’s talk strategy before we head out.”

The wildlife crew hesitated for a split second, then straightened up, ready for action.

Ethan said. “Whatever you need, Sierra, just say the word. We’re here to support you.”

Sierra nodded and said, “We’ll split into two cars. Ethan and Mark, you two know the wild best, so you’ll take Alex with you. Alex, you’re backup. Keep your eyes peeled for any Kaelenridge Sheep tracks nearby.

“Quinn, since you know these mountains best, your car goes up front, and we’ll follow close behind.”

Then Sierra looked over at Timothy and said, “You’ll be with Sophie and me. You’re our backup. Your job is to watch out for any signs of poachers.”

“Stay safe, everyone. Let’s head out!” Sierra called out, her voice steady and commanding.
