Chapter 109
Cora POV
It was almost three in the afternoon when I woke to an empty bed. I didn’t even feel Gunner leave. I must have been too tired to notice.
Was that a good thing or a bad one?
Like, does that mean I trust him so much that his leaving the bed was unnoticed?
Becoming comfortable around Gunner?
That scares me, because even though I was not feeling quite so deeply, so quickly, I did trust Jake, but he never lived with me, so I don’t know if I reached the stage of not knowing when he left the bed, and I am scared to have my trust broken again; it hurt so much the last time.
After a quick trip to the bathroom and a change of clothes, I headed downstairs to the sound of giggling girls. I followed the sound to find Gunner sitting at the dining table, his laptop in front of him, and three women trying to gain his attention. I leaned on the wall and watched them, pulled out my phone, and took a few photos. One girl undid some buttons on her shirt to reveal the top of her lacy bra. Gunner paid them no mind, even when the girls tried their seductive voices, he acted like they weren’t there.
Poor Gunner, it must be hard to be that good–looking. I chuckled to myself.
“Are you ladies on a break?” I asked, having seen enough.
“No, Ma’am,” they chorused, and one started to do up her buttons.
“Stay right there. Clara?” I shouted out, knowing she would hear me. I heard her in the kitchen talking to Sonya about breakfast.
“Yes, Cora?” Clara came rushing in.
“These ladies are trying to seduce my man, and I don’t like it. They are not on a break, so they are not working as I’ve paid them to. Fire the four of them.” Gunner had raised his head and was looking between me and those in the room.
“All of them?”
“Yes, I don’t need people trying to seduce Gunner, or any male that comes here, I want them gone now.”
“We need them because they clean the rooms and help in the kitchen.” Clara tried to defend them, but I don’t need to worry about these ladies in my own home; they are worse than the ladies at the clubhouse. At least they follow the rules most of the time.
“They are not needed. If they have time to stop work to chat with colleagues during work hours, it
suggests they don’t have enough work to do, which means we don’t need them. Lewis, can you have some men escort these ladies off the premises and ensure they do not return?”
Chapter 109
“Wait! live here. If you kiek me out, have nowhere to go.” One sobbed, begging to stay.
~“Maybe you should have thought of that before you started to chat up my boyfriend.”
“Your boyfriend? I didn’t know.”

“Didn’t seem to be concerned about where you live when misbehaving. I see no reason to keep you on. You signed the agreement, and you all breached it. It didn’t even last a week.” Lewis took the one who lived here to her room to pack, while the other men escorted the other ladies out the door. I might sound harsh, but what if one does that to Oddball? I can’t risk Strike losing that child because she gets stressed out at the thought of him being surrounded by desperate ladies.
“Gunner, have you eaten yet?” I asked my voice no longer cold and calm.
“Was waiting for you, Babe.”
“Cooked or cereal?”
“Cooked.” I nodded and left him to his work, hunting down Sonya to cook something for us.
Sonya was already cooking our breakfast.
“Morning, Sonya, can you make a lunch box up for me? I am on night duty tonight, nothing too heavy, please.”
“Sure, breakfast in ten.” Sonya never turned around, her focus on the stove.
“Cora, can we talk about some replacements for the ladies who have gone?” Clara stood beside me, her tablet in hand, terminating the girls. When payday comes, I will decide how much to pay them; it won’t be much, as Mr Cummins has already paid out their holiday pay.
“That’s what eight staff gone, did we need them all?”
“Not all, but we need someone who will help in the kitchen, and maybe two for the cleaning. I have friend’s who are interested in working here if you approve. They have the experience to do the job, and I give you my word, they are not slackers like these. I have been trying to have Mrs Cummins remove them for months, but she was too kind–hearted. I warned them you won’t tolerate that sort of behaviour. They saw you remove the others, but I don’t think it sank in. They didn’t think you would fire them, thinking that because they had been here for a few years, they were indispensable.”
“No one is indispensable. Okay, bring them in tomorrow. Will meet them after dinner, say ten o’clock.” Clara
made notes and left me to return to Gunner in the dining room.
“Breakfast is almost ready. Do you want to eat here or in the kitchen?” I asked, watching Gunner try to
finish what he was doing, before looking up. His eyes widened when he saw me.
“Here is fine. I thought you would be dressed and ready for work.”
“Don’t need to be at work for a few hours yet, it’s an eight o’clock start, thought you could take me to work
on your bike, if you are not needed at the clubhouse.”

“I am all yours. I don’t need to be there till later, a small party to celebrate Strike’s pregnancy, they have left already. Haven’t seen Demetri, think he stayed the night at the clubhouse, Strike said Oddball stayed there too, and told Demetri to stay as it was late.”
“What about all the prep work for the weekend ride, Bluey? Please text me so I can go on this ride with you. Since it’s my first time riding with the club, it would be good for bonding. A chick that started yesterday was proving to be okay so far, and she will cover the weekend shifts, along with some fella who’s a nurse too. Both of us can have the weekend off and go on the ride, hence my wanting more time on the bike to get my body used to it.”
“That sounds like the hospital was getting some good staff at last. Maybe you can give up being a nurse, or go part–time, what do you say?”
“You’re jumping the gun a bit; we don’t know if the new staff will firin. They need to complete the trial period, even I have to finish that, so talking about reducing my hours is a little premature.”
“But you would like to, wouldn’t you? You have so much to do: the community, your father, this house, and
