Chapter 165

Xavier POV

LAZA From

How rude, phoning at that time of night,” Ruby said. I was telling them about the call and what time they called, after our late at night, or should I have said early morning, when we had headed to bed. It was after midnight; being woken after only a few hours of sleep, I wasn’t fully with it yet, and wasn’t ready to be told to get to the clubhouse. Over the years, I have had those kinds of calls, but thought now I had handed over my cut, that I was over getting calls like that in the middle of the night. Five wouldn’t be that bad if we hadn’t stayed up so late.

Go wake up, my daughter; we have something important to discuss. Please,Demetri ordered, and added another mouthful of bacon to his mouth.

What’s going on?I pushed, as I finished making the coffee, and eyed the food longingly.

Sorry, Xavier, you will need to wait. We don’t want to say it twice; you both should hear it together.Ruby smiled, giving me the impression it wasn’t a death notice.

Maybe she’s pregnant, wait a minute.

How long have they been together?

Would she know so soon?

I had come downstairs to make coffee for myself and Cora; we hadn’t set that part up in the bedroom yet. I snatched a slice of bacon off Demetri’s plate and shoved it in my mouth and headed up to wake up Cora. As expected, Cora tried to get me to share information I didn’t have. That might have been why they didn’t tell me, because I would have caved and told Cora. I knew I would have one look at her pleading eyes, and I melted.

We made it back downstairs; Demetri and Ruby had already finished eating and had left the kitchen. Cora and I ate a quick breakfast, neither saying much; I guess both had thoughts about what Demetri wanted to talk about; it could be almost anything that had happened overnight. After eating, we headed to Cora’s office, where we had left all our information, and assumed that was where Demetri wanted us to be; he hadn’t actually mentioned where. I had assumed it was the most logical place in my mind.

Cora’s office was where we found them, not at the desk or with files in their hands, but seated in the lounge, talking all cozy and intimate. I felt I was intruding on someone’s personal space.

Cora suddenly squealed and left my side as she rushed to Ruby, lifting her hand, inspecting a ring on her finger.

Are congratulations in order?I asked, moving closer to Demetri, reaching out my hand to shake his: As Demetri stood, I pulled him into a bro hug and slapped his back.

Treat her well; Ruby means a lot to me,I repeated the words from his advice when I got engaged to Ruby.

Demetri chuckled.

Cheeky, don’t worry, I will.We stood and watched as the two women chatted, Ruby/explaining the proposal and Cora pushing for more details, like how she felt at the time. Did she hesitate?

This is much better than what my imagination had thought; I had thought something bad had happened overnight, with the men on the field.I nudged Demetri with my shoulder. Inside, I was so happy for both of them, but more so for Cora; she was gaining a fantastic stepmother and a female confidant, something Cora needed, whether she knew it or not.

Open to a double engagement party and wedding?Demetri asked beside me; the girls hadn’t stopped glowing.

It’s the girlsbig day; it’s their call; I will support any of their decisions. But I am not opposed to the idea; we can both stand nervously waiting at the altar for our girls. Will you want a club wedding or a big wedding, typical of your wealth and stature? It was good to see the girls so animated; they were sitting on the lounge chair now, talking about what? Who knows? They had smiles on their faces; that’s all that counted.

Up to the girls, I guess; we are just the bystanders in this.Something we both agreed on: it’s the girlsday; we will do all that’s in our ability and power to make it as special as possible.

Changing the subject.I then went on to discuss our thoughts on Dormouse, and how much danger he might be in; at the moment, he was an easy target. Demetri agreed and would get him moved quietly. It will be interesting to see how Dormouse reacts when he sees Jake in the facility. Will he recognise Jake, or will Jake recognise Dormouse?

I have a couple of people in that rehabilitation facility, placed there months ago to follow someone else. They are keeping an eye on Jake. I will add Dormouse to their list, although he will have to use his real name in his records, with a note stating his preferred name.

What do they do there?I was interested in Demetri; he had his finger on so many pies, I couldn’t keep up.

“A doctor, a physiotherapist that specialises in sports injuries, a nurse that will be on the same floor as the men, because he specialises in spinal injuries. Three cleaners. I can add more if needed.

The director of the facility is a friend of mine. And just like that, the problem was sorted, and action will happen today. He will ensure that Dormouse moves and gets the right rehabilitation. Even though both of us feel being involved makes us angry, sometimes you’ve got to use what you’ve got, and Dormouse might be the weak link we need to put the final pieces of the puzzle together.

Demetri, Xavier: Cora and I have agreed; we are going to have a joint engagement party and wedding, a small one, as neither of us has family to include, and very few friends to invite. We thought the nuptials would be quiet, just the witnesses and officiant; we didn’t want to walk down an aisle at some church. We wouldn’t mind if the wedding were at your club, since we will be members, and you have lots of friends, or somewhere else; however, we do not want a big media circus. Cora suggested that we could have two receptions: one at the club with your friends and one somewhere more public, for the social side of your life, which would hopefully satisfy the public and make the media side happy. Still, we will leave the logistics to you, as you have the security experience our wedding might need on both occasions. Now I am rambling; we have time to prepare.

Dates?I asked, smirking at the girls still beaming with happiness.

The engagement will be next weekend, quiet, a few friends, then the wedding, if it can be arranged, a month later. I didn’t think you could pull it off any quicker.Ruby was still the one doing all the talking; Cora

Ooked like she was thinking but happy.

How about we fly to Las Vegas, get married today, forgo the engagement, and have two receptions, one at the club, and one more public, one of the major hotels we can book. I have a friend who owes me a favour or two. We can hire the top four floors and have guests stay the night.Demetri threw out a suggestion that almost made me drop to the ground. I keep forgetting how rich he was. Even with these two houses as impressive as they are, one, Cora’s, one was his, didn’t even dent his bank balance when he purchased them and decorated them. It was like

dipping into his petty cash.

I see Demetri as he is, a man who came to bond with his lost daughter and, along the way, found a future wife and a future soninlaw; that change in his life was a long time coming, and I have seen
