Chapter 64
Gunner POV

Cora left with her laptop to spend the afternoon with Hacker; those two have hit it off well, maybe because Cora understands some of his work and can relate to him. I try not to let the jealousy bug hit me.
They are working, not flirting.
Hacker never had a permanent girl, not in the four years he has been patched.
Mine was not going to be his first.
Get that out of your head. Don’t start feeling insecure now; it makes you look ugly.
“That clean up complete?” Oddball’s voice pulled me out of my self–pity moment.
“Yes, will check the furnace in about an hour or so, top it back up, but yeah, it’s done,” I replied, thinking about the furnace, which never goes out, but drops the ash down a chute when it fills to a certain level. It was made by a club member many years ago; it’s not one you can buy from a store or manufacturer.
“Dirty job, but you are the only person I trust to do it correctly and be discreet about it,” Oddball added with that kind of respect. He doesn’t give many people that kind of respect or any perks as the boss, but you never know who is a friend or just being the boss. We were friends before we became patch members, and before he became the president, he knew I was loyal, beyond the club level.
“It’s definitely a dirty job. Did you manage to get more out of them before they moved on?” I had a
question earlier, but the timing wasn’t right. Now it’s just us again, and we can relax as we talk.
“Nope, same story, over and over again. I think they were not in the loop, just the hit men and spies, not
knowing who or why, other than getting paid good money for information. The chain link was that guy who was shot at the roadside café. Hacker was still trying to find out who that man was, hacking into the police files. So far, it’s been locked away so tight that it’s sent Hacker to dead ends.”
“Sounds like a man of importance. The hard part was that his name was common, like Smith or Jones, so it would take a lot of time to find the right one. It appears that someone was trying to hide who he was and erase his history. Did you ask Scrubs to check the hospital records that he was taken to?”
“No, hadn’t thought about the hospital. Maybe ask Cora when she comes down; she has access to that system now. Scrubs gave it to her when she started searching for accidents related to unexplained tyre
blowouts.”
“I just received an sss from Cora. It looks like she forwarded it to you, too. Let’s see what’s on her mind.” I moved to stand behind Oddball and read the sss.
“Do you think this was real, or a set–up?” I asked. The wording was not suspicious, but I had never heard of anyone receiving a guest invitation in response to a complaint before.
“We shall go and take a few members with us, in case she needs backup.”

“Hang on, we don’t know if Cora is accepting this yet,” I replied, trying not to jump the gun.
“Then let’s get her down here.” A knock at the door delayed that call.
“Enter.”

In walked Hacker and Cora. Cora moved straight towards me and pecked me on the lips. My arms wrapped around her automatically, and pulled her towards me. I moved to a chair and sat down, placing Cora on my knee.
“We were about to contact you regarding the sss. Are you going to accept the guest seat?” Oddball asked before finding out what brought them here.
“Yes, I am not scared of being brought down by negative people or hecklers. I have experience as the underdog; this is too important for the townspeople to ignore; children are at risk. Sooner or later, one will be seriously hurt. If they don’t voice it now, when that happens, if they do nothing from this complaint, then the finger can be pointed at those who oppose any changes for the safety of the young ones.” Cora answers confidently.
“We agree and intend to send a group of supporters to help and protect you and get you out of there safely if things get out of hand,” Oddball adds. You could tell he was glad Cora was not going to back out, just because of a meeting at the town hall where she would be on display and could be tagged as a troublemaker they wanted to silence quickly.
“Oddball, Cora’s suggestion of a drone is doable. I can actually launch it from here, using five or six drones that will relay information back to us. We have found two places where some of our members can sit and wait while we search the area without looking suspicious. ” Hacker rolled out a map of our local town
area, and roads leading north and south that have been frequented by shooters.
“Members can sit here, in this café, and that fuel stops, and drink coffee and chat, while the drones hunt.
We have worked out the days of higher incidences and a rough time frame. According to Cora, they never go west or east. Only so far are these two roads actively reported, between these two points. Once we locate them, there are trails, here and there. That must be how the shooter is getting in and out. We can
block it off in case they slip by us.” Hacker continued with Cora and his ideas, excitement in his voice, he was going to get to put his experimental drones into action, and he was both happy to try them out and nervous about the fear of failure.
“Send your drones out to the furthest point, this one, and see how well the information is relayed, like, is there a delay in receiving the information, because it’s relayed? Give a trial run before we put men out there in danger,” Oddball suggested, as he pursued the map and our suggestions.
“Was going to do that tomorrow. Cora was willing to go out and call me. We can work as a team; it’s one day that has no shooting reports, and we are confident that the shooter was possibly at work. Another suggestion that Cora had was the possibility that the shooter was a delivery driver and was in the area during those days. It could even be the one who reported his tyre had been shot. The same day, Gunner was brought down, maybe while driving between those two towns. This road was the one he often used, and he knew the area well. He could spend the night locally, possibly have a dirt bike or quad bike he uses

te access that area.” Hacker looked at Cora to see if she was going to add to this idea, but he only gained a nod and a smile.
“I can take Cora to the place and stay with her tomorrow. See what we can find before the weekend starts, and she needs to prepare for that meeting. It will also get her out of town while her dad gets here,” I offer, giving her a supportive squeeze.
“Take Loser, Snail and Carnage with you. Stay the day out there, and give a good test.” Hacker rolled up his
