Chapter 80

Chapter 80

Cora POV

“Not over the phone,” I replied, stopping his barrage of questions.

“Yes, yes, of course, we can meet. Maybe catch up with dinner somewhere.” He didn’t sound like he wanted to let go of me, now that I had called

“You are on the other side of the country, I can’t just come up and fly to you, I have work to do,” I replied, trying to bring myself back, grounding myself to what was real.

“Why are you working? You must have enough to live off.” He sounded surprised that I was working. Does he work?

“I am a nurse, and a good one. I love my job.”

“Wow, that’s a great profession to have. What about your mother’s business?”

“I do work on that, online, and take phone calls, and once a quarter, join them on a video conference. I haven’t decided what to do about it. That business was mothers baby, and although she taught me all about it, it’s not my passion.”

“But what about?” He started again.

“Please not over the phone.” I tried again, but refusing my father was getting harder, because he sounded

genuine.

“Text me when you can visit, or I can come to you. Let me know, don’t shut me out, please.” He begged. I bet he would drop everything and come to me.

“I am working night shifts, two nights on, then two days off, then three nights on, three off. We can work

between those off days.”

“Sure, I can fly over, then helicopter to you, text me where and what day. I need a whole day with you. No

more than that, we have twenty-three years to catch up on.”

Γ

“We can work something out. I am new to this role and can’t take time off at the moment. We should talk

over the phone, or I can conference call and chat that way.”

“Please, I need to see your face and find out more about your life. You are my only child. I thought of you often and never stopped loving your mother, hoping she would reach out to me. Now she is gone, you are

all I have left.”

“There is a lot to cover. I need you here to talk in private. Maybe on my next two-night break, that would be Friday and Saturday, if you are available.” I offered that it was the best I could do for now.

“I can call later tonight, we can work out a time for FaceTime, and share information,” he replied, and I bet our call would have gone on longer if a woman’s voice hadn’t cut in.

“Got to yo, sorry, that was my chef, It’s time to eat. I work from home most of the time so that I can come to you. I can work from there, too.” He said goodbye and hung up. The voice sounded more personal than just a chef. I wouldn’t blame him if he found a new woman to warm his bed. It’s been a long time. I’m just

shocked that he doesn’t have other children.

Chapter 80

“What made today special?”

“The DNA results came in. Her father isn’t her father, but her uncle, and her stepbrother is her cousin.”

“Interesting. Go on. That didn’t explain the box being opened.”

“Cora thought that inside the box might have answers. She knew her birth certificate didn’t list her father’s name, but never investigated why. The contents of the box gave some answers, but not enough.” Gunner spoke softly, as if speaking too loudly would set me off. In tears again, men don’t appear to know how to handle tears.

“What do you need from me?” Oddball leaned forward to look closer at Cora.
