Raelynn immediately frowned, whatever anticipation she had for the temple trip evaporating into thin air. She had only agreed to go so she could pray for Lily and her grandfather. Instead, it was just another setup.
Frustrated, she said, "Grandma, you know perfectly well that Sebastian and I are already—"
"Sebastian said he booked a later flight. You have the whole morning to arrange a nice date! Lynnie, nobody is perfect. Marriage takes work from both sides, and I know you still have feelings for him."
Raelynn was left speechless.
No matter how deep her feelings used to be, they weren't infinite. No one was invincible enough to unconditionally love someone who continually stomped on their heart.
Matilda hung up before Raelynn could argue. When she tried to call back, it went straight to voicemail.
She wasn't one to sit around wallowing in self-pity, and she quickly formed a plan. She actually did need to speak privately with Sebastian. She had to find a way to get her family's heirloom back—the Rosewood Padlock Charm. This was a perfect opportunity to negotiate.
She packed her bags and dialed his number. She had no idea where he even was, but the call didn't connect.
Raelynn brushed it off and went downstairs to grab breakfast alone. She assumed Sebastian would either call her back or show up at the hotel. But she waited until the very last second before she had to leave for the airport, and there was still total silence.
Left with no other choice, she rushed to the airport alone. It was obvious what had happened.
Sebastian had stood her up. He had completely played Matilda.
Raelynn wasn't even surprised. After all, she wasn't the woman he wanted to spend his "romantic couple time" with anyway.
By the time she landed in Kingsford, it was already afternoon. She didn't care about being ditched, but she was deeply anxious about her grandmother's heirloom. Because the medicinal samples needed immediate processing, she went straight to the NexusMind lab. As she pulled on her sterile gown, she dialed Sebastian's number one more time.
This time, he picked up.
"You're back in Kingsford?" His deep, magnetic voice sounded oddly cheerful.
