She truly couldn't understand Luke's thought process. During their past few encounters, he had constantly thrown sarcastic jabs at her, even though she was certain she hadn't done anything to provoke him. Now, he suddenly acted like her fierce protector. But to her, a favor didn't cancel out past disrespect. True evening of the score meant paying someone back double.
You didn't just slap someone in the face, hand them a piece of candy, and call it even.
Luke clearly had powerful backing. The man who had been beaten initially wanted to press charges, but after a brief, hushed conversation with Luke's people, he quietly agreed to a settlement.
However, the bureaucracy still had to run its course.
"You're adults. Brawling in public is an ugly look. Watch yourselves in the future," the duty officer warned, handing Raelynn a clipboard. "Ms. Ortiz, just sign here, then have a family member come down to sign for your release, and you're free to go."
Raelynn nodded. "Understood."
Just then, Luke finished his own paperwork and strolled over, arms crossed over his chest, a mocking smirk playing on his lips. "Yeah, perfect timing. Call that mysterious, hidden husband of yours down here. Let's see if he minds his wife playing the field and causing a scene."
He truly believed tonight was the perfect opportunity to expose whatever shady marriage Raelynn was hiding.
Raelynn shot him a freezing glare, completely ignoring his bait.
With Chloe Hudson out of town scouting locations for the new show, Raelynn had no choice but to call Preston Moreno. She absolutely refused to call Professor Finch. The man was eighty-eight years old; waking him up in the middle of the night over a police station visit would stress him out, and she'd never hear the end of his lecturing. Preston was her only hope.
*"We're sorry, the number you have reached is unavailable..."*
Hearing the automated voicemail, a wave of exhaustion washed over her. Of course she couldn't reach him when she actually needed him. It felt like the universe was playing a sick joke.
She tightened her grip on the phone, definitively ruling out calling Sebastian. For one, she had blocked his number days ago. More importantly, even if she did call, there was zero guarantee a man as cold as Sebastian would actually show up to bail her out.
Why set herself up for more humiliation?
