After all, joining a prominent dynasty like the Croix family was easy; walking away unscathed was an entirely different story.
"This is between Raelynn and me. You don't need to intervene," Sebastian said, completely unbothered.
His nonchalance only darkened Matilda's expression. "If I don't intervene, who will? I'm laying down the law right now. If you insist on divorcing Raelynn, I will never let Seraphina Vance off the hook! Let's see how her insignificant little family survives my wrath!"
Sebastian's brow twitched slightly.
But he remained silent.
Matilda walked over to Raelynn. "Don't worry, Raelynn. My family has wronged you, and I have your back."
Raelynn simply shook her head. "Grandma, I'm the one who wants the divorce. I don't want to live like this anymore. I have no regrets."
The words struck Matilda speechless.
Even Sebastian, lounging on the sofa, glanced over. His eyes were utterly devoid of emotion.
Julian, who had been quiet until now, looked genuinely surprised.
It was hard to believe such absolute detachment had come from Raelynn's mouth. It was almost... comical.
He had witnessed firsthand just how hopelessly devoted she used to be to Sebastian.
Her sudden about-face caught him off guard, and a soft chuckle escaped his lips.
The untimely laughter sounded especially grating in the tense room.
Julian quickly shrugged. "Sorry. Please, continue."
Raelynn shot him a look. She knew exactly what Julian was thinking—he didn't believe she was serious.
But she no longer cared about what anyone thought.
Matilda opened her mouth to speak.
Finally, she let out an exhausted sigh. "I know you've been wronged, sweetheart. But for a family like ours, divorce is like tearing our lives apart. The ripple effects are catastrophic. If you're truly dead set on this..."
She understood the underlying threat perfectly. The Croix family hadn't kicked her out despite her failure to produce an heir over the last seven years—she was supposed to view that as an act of immense grace, and refusing now would make her an ungrateful wretch.
Matilda appeared to be fighting for Raelynn's rights, but in reality, she was trapping her.
She made it seem like she was taking Raelynn's side by barring Seraphina and any illegitimate children from the family.
But in truth, she was using the past seven years of childlessness as leverage, demanding a baby as compensation for supposedly wasting Sebastian's time.
Raelynn knew the ruthless tactics of the Croix family all too well.
This wasn't something she could simply fix by saying no.
With her lips pressed into a thin line, she looked at Sebastian, who hadn't spoken a word in her defense.
She prayed he would crush Matilda's delusions.
Sensing her gaze, Sebastian met her eyes, locking onto her for two heavy seconds.
