Raelynn didn't flinch, her voice steady and carrying a quiet power.
The sprawling living room plunged into a suffocating, dead silence.
Even Mr. Davies felt his heart skip a beat.
Raelynn was probably the first person in history who had ever dared to express such sheer disgust toward Mr. Croix to his face.
Julian instinctively looked at Sebastian, who remained completely still.
Even if Raelynn had a sharp tongue, if this was all a twisted ploy to win her husband back, she shouldn't be burning her bridges so thoroughly.
Sebastian's eyes darkened further. The moment those words left her lips, his gaze narrowed into a predatory squint.
He didn't speak, yet the air in the room thickened with palpable, explosive tension.
Raelynn felt absolutely no remorse.
She had wanted to throw those exact words in his face for a very long time.
Sebastian stared at her for what felt like an eternity. Suddenly, the corner of his lips twitched into a faint, humorless smile, his eyes utterly unreadable. "We just need to stall. As long as we pretend the divorce hasn't happened, the old lady won't act out. You don't need to worry. I have no habit of forcing myself on anyone."
Raelynn clearly understood his underlying meaning.
He had absolutely zero intention of sleeping with her anyway.
That was the whole point of faking the marriage.
It protected Seraphina from his grandmother, ensured his legal status as a single man, and allowed him to remain perfectly faithful to the woman he actually loved.
Such brilliant foresight.
It was truly a testament to his profound devotion—just not to her.
"Deal."
Raelynn tapped the divorce agreement on the desk. "Sign it, and I'll take my original copy."
After all that negotiating, she just realized he hadn't actually signed his side yet.
Prompted by her reminder, Sebastian lowered his gaze. His long eyelashes cast dark shadows over his cheekbones. Without a hint of emotion, he rolled the pen between his fingers before smoothly scrawling his signature next to hers.
The second he finished, Raelynn snatched the original copy right out from under his hand.
She slipped it into her bag as she stood up. "I'll see you at city hall."
Without another word, she turned and headed for the door.
There was nothing left to say.
Seven years of her life. All the words, all the tears, all the heart-wrenching realizations—they were completely in the past now.
The door clicked shut.
Julian frowned, deeply unsettled by the entire exchange.
He had always been inexplicably annoyed by Raelynn's pathetic subservience, assuming she would inevitably crawl back and swallow whatever pain Sebastian dealt her.
But now...
He stood tall and rigid for a long moment before giving a nonchalant hum. "Yeah."
—
The spring rain fell, cold and biting. A lingering chill hung in the air.
Yet, Raelynn felt lighter than she had in years.
She returned to her apartment and quickly took a hot shower.
Sebastian had apparently grown a conscience, tearing up the cutthroat prenuptial agreement his grandfather had forced on her seven years ago, replacing it with this massive compensation package.
They even had a set date to pick up the divorce certificate.
For the first time, she had something wonderful to look forward to.
She walked over to her nightstand and pulled out the custody relinquishment form she had tricked Sebastian into signing earlier.
Her heart raced with anticipation.
In two weeks, the divorce would be final.
Sebastian would permanently lose any legal right to interfere with Lily.
Her six-year plan to keep her child and ditch the father was officially a success.
After safely storing the paperwork, Raelynn checked the time.
Director Adrian Moreno was still out of town on a business trip, so Shane Vance's violent tantrum in his office still hadn't been dealt with. Seraphina was likely scrambling to find a way to apologize to him right now.
