For a split second, Raelynn thought she had misheard.
Annulled...?
She had no idea the fast-track channel Sebastian arranged could actually be reversed.
She absolutely couldn't accept a scenario like that.
It meant gambling with Lily's entire future.
The old woman was stomping directly on her greatest vulnerability.
The kindness Matilda had once shown her now felt like nothing more than an illusion.
Meeting the old woman's gaze, a cold shiver ran down her spine. "Why are you doing this? Isn't marriage supposed to be our own free choice?"
Displeased with Raelynn's current "disobedience," Matilda frowned. "You have me backing you up. What more do you have to complain about?"
The words made a painful lump form in Raelynn's throat.
It was as if she was the one being ungrateful.
"If you two had gone through the standard legal channels, I wouldn't have been able to reverse it. Consider this a second chance." Matilda's expression softened slightly. "Last time, my condition was for you to have a child before divorcing him. I trusted you and went soft, choosing not to force your hand. And my reward was your deception. Is this how you repay me?"
Raelynn said nothing.
She only now fully understood.
The supposed kindness the old woman had shown her was just the superficial benevolence of a powerful matriarch.
As long as she obeyed, she received fake affection. But the moment she rebelled...
The mask instantly fell away.
"You never actually loved or cared for me that much. What is your real reason for refusing to let us divorce? Besides the fact that Seraphina was formally engaged to Sebastian's late brother, what else is there?"
Raelynn's heart was a pool of stagnant water. She saw right through it.
The Croix family had never intended to give her a choice in the matter.
Yet, there were countless women lining up to bear Sebastian's children.
