Even though Raelynn was merely a bystander in this clash, she was shocked.
Ian's provocation was incredibly blunt and cut right to the bone.
To anyone listening, it sounded exactly like Ian knew she was still legally married to Sebastian.
However, Ian remained perfectly composed, offering a polite, diplomatic smile. "Mind that I ruined your moment. It looked like Ms. Vance was on the verge of proposing. But if you haven't made up your mind about her yet, I suppose I gave you a convenient way out."
Raelynn glanced at Sebastian.
Ian was right. If the stunt had continued, would Sebastian have agreed to marry Seraphina?
With so many people watching, he likely wouldn't have humiliated her, even if she played it off as a joke.
Perhaps Sebastian caught the faint trace of mockery in Raelynn's eyes, because he met her gaze head-on.
"You have quite the sense of humor, Mr. Hudson." Sebastian's lips curled into a cold smirk. "Just make sure this isn't a fleeting impulse."
Even though Sebastian didn't say it explicitly, Raelynn caught his underlying meaning.
He was telling Ian to open his eyes and see who he was really dealing with.
She didn't need another reminder of how highly Sebastian thought of her. She turned to Ian. "Let's go."
Ian nodded.
Raelynn had no intention of wasting another word on Sebastian, let alone explaining her non-existent relationship with Ian.
Preston and the NexusMind crew were waiting for them in the parking area.
The weather in Houston was humid.
As Raelynn stepped down from the curb, her foot slipped.
She violently pitched forward.
"Careful."
Two voices rang out in unison.
A large, warm hand clamped firmly around Raelynn's arm, stabilizing her instantly.
She turned to see Sebastian frowning slightly, his dark eyes fixed on her, betraying zero emotion. "Watch your step."
Ian's hand had only just grazed the fabric of her sleeve. He hadn't expected Sebastian to react so quickly.
The air instantly thickened with tension.
At that precise moment, a sharp voice called out from behind them. "Sebastian?"
Raelynn turned her head.
Seraphina had appeared out of nowhere. She was forcing a smile, but her eyes were venomous.
She glared at Raelynn as if she were a homewrecker trying to seduce her man.
Ian glanced at Sebastian's hand, which was still firmly wrapped around Raelynn's arm.
"Time to let go, Mr. Croix," Ian interjected smoothly. "Your girlfriend looks like she's about to throw a fit."
Raelynn preemptively shoved Sebastian's hand away.
Seraphina quickly closed the distance, seamlessly looping her arm through Sebastian's. She cast a suspicious, unsettled look at Ian, though she didn't dare ask outright why a man of his stature was proposing to a woman like Raelynn. "Mr. Hudson. We'll be taking our leave now."
Raelynn saw right through Seraphina's pathetic display of territorial dominance.
Sebastian didn't seem to care that Raelynn had shoved him away.
He didn't ask any questions about her and Ian. With a brief, indifferent nod, he turned and walked away.
He played the role of the perfect stranger flawlessly.
The husband and wife parted ways as if they meant absolutely nothing to each other.
Raelynn walked toward the waiting cars with Ian.
