Dr. Hayes's chest heaved. She fully understood what Ian was doing. "I don't need you to remind me. This is between the Yves and Hudson families. I have no intention of making things difficult for anyone else."
Seraphina frowned in dissatisfaction.
Why wasn't Ian throwing Raelynn under the bus right now? It would have been the perfect way to redirect the matriarch's wrath.
Julian sneered. "Mr. Hudson, you're the one breaking your promises here."
Ian looked at him. "Then what would you have me do, Julian? Exactly how long am I supposed to wait to prove my loyalty?"
Julian's face went frigid.
But he had no counterargument.
Raelynn stayed completely silent.
It felt like the quietest people in the room were her and...
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sebastian sitting there with effortless elegance.
It was almost laughable.
He was her husband of seven years, yet he was watching her romantic entanglement play out like a spectator at a movie.
Because she was sitting directly across from him, Sebastian caught her slight movement. He lifted his gaze with perfect precision. Raelynn could see straight into his eyes—they were completely devoid of pain, jealousy, or any emotion whatsoever.
She wasn't surprised. She just offered a faint, empty smile.
Dr. Hayes knew Ian was telling the truth. In all these years, he had never been involved in a single scandal. He was utterly ruthless in business, yet remarkably disciplined in his personal life.
With a hardened expression, she asked, "Did you come here today intending to completely sever ties with our family?"
Ian's tone remained steadfast. "That's a heavy accusation. The choice ultimately lies with your family."
Dr. Hayes laughed coldly.
What a brilliant way to say the choice was hers!
Now that he had publicly admitted his feelings for another woman, if the Yves family pretended nothing had happened and pushed forward with the marriage, they would look incredibly desperate. The gossip would be merciless.
Thinking of this, Dr. Hayes couldn't help but look at the stubbornly silent Raelynn.
Even Julian and Leo whipped their heads around to check Sebastian's reaction.
Did Raelynn really just leave Sebastian out of it entirely?
But they had to admit, her response was genius.
Though surprised by the mention of a dead ex-husband, Dr. Hayes's expression softened considerably.
She knew perfectly well that elite, traditional families like the Hudsons would rarely accept a divorced woman. By saying she was 'letting nature take its course', Raelynn offered a neutral, diplomatic answer. She didn't offend the Yves family, yet she still gave Ian enough face by neither accepting nor rejecting him.
Dr. Hayes sighed, the sharp edge in her demeanor fading away.
"Child, I'm not trying to make things difficult for you. A woman's worth isn't measured by whether her marriage succeeded, or if she's ever been married at all. I'm just a grandmother who can't help but fiercely protect her own. This isn't directed at you." She suddenly looked much older, burdened by years of exhaustion.
Raelynn was genuinely surprised.
She had been certain Dr. Hayes would hate her for this.
Standing up, her face pale from the emotional toll, Dr. Hayes fixed a hard stare on Ian. "Perhaps the Hudson family has harbored grievances against us for a long time. I refuse to let my granddaughter bear the blame for holding you back. Since you've laid your cards on the table today, I won't force the issue."
