Raelynn froze mid-motion.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She turned her head, meeting Ian's dark, intense gaze.
Ian noticed the flash of discomfort in her eyes. His usually stoic, unsmiling features softened into a faint, reassuring smile.
He handed her bag over. "No deadlines. No pressure."
He effortlessly diffused the tension, deliberately cutting off the rejection she had been instinctively preparing to blurt out.
Then, he added simply, "See you next time."
He didn't chase her for an answer, maintaining the perfect distance.
Standing outside the building, Raelynn's mind raced, filled with a mess of complicated emotions.
The last time Ian proposed, they had both brushed it off so casually that she had genuinely pushed it out of her mind, assuming it was just a chaotic misunderstanding.
But bringing it up again meant he wasn't joking.
Raelynn rubbed her temples in frustration. She was the kind of person who could joke around or laugh things off forever, but the second someone offered her genuine, unavoidable emotional sincerity, she completely short-circuited.
As far as she was concerned, her only real relationship had been an absolute disaster.
It would be a lie to say she wasn't exhausted by men and romance.
Asking her to genuinely consider opening her heart again was an incredibly tall order.
Perhaps Ian was just doing this to escape the Yves family. They had zero emotional foundation. Even if he did harbor some lingering affection for her now, how long could that possibly last?
Raelynn was a realist. She had no energy to worry about anything beyond the immediate present.
She let out a heavy sigh.
When she returned to her office upstairs, she noticed a new iMessage from Luke.
Luke: *Raelynn, what the hell is going on with you and Ian? He's practically engaged to the Yves family. I hope you wake up and stop giving him false hope. Reject him before it gets worse. You can't be this greedy. Just because you couldn't lock down a taken man like Sebastian doesn't mean you should go around leading everyone else on.*
Raelynn rubbed the bridge of her nose.
She desperately wanted to block him again, but Luke was an investor. Unfortunately, she couldn't.
She didn't bother replying. She just muted his notifications and went back to work.
Seraphina frowned slightly.
Was he calling her a snob?
But she quickly brushed it off.
The licensing was locked in, and her PhD application was next. Why on earth would she lower herself to bicker with Raelynn? They weren't even playing in the same league.
"Everything looks perfect. Pleasure doing business," Seraphina said, her mood soaring.
Raelynn was in a great mood, too.
She was collecting massive licensing fees. There was absolutely nothing bad about that. It was all going straight into her fund for raising Lily.
"Take care," Preston replied, not wasting time on pleasantries.
Seraphina suddenly paused. "Mr. Moreno, we might be seeing a lot of each other in the future. I've applied for Director Moreno's doctoral program. We'll practically be trusted colleagues and friends soon."
She shot Raelynn a pointed look as she spoke.
She wanted Raelynn to clearly understand the sheer canyon of difference between their statuses.
