Matilda frowned.
She knew perfectly well how much glory Seraphina had secured today. But if she simply accepted her along with the tide, then Sebastian and Raelynn's relationship would be permanently severed right here and now.
In this current scenario, even though Seraphina had indeed brought honor to the family, it left them in a highly passive position. They didn't want to directly acknowledge Seraphina's status, yet they couldn't deny it either. It looked exactly like a tacit agreement that she was about to join the Croix family—all part of Sebastian's scheming.
Sebastian was using this very occasion to inextricably link Seraphina's successes and failures with their own.
Raelynn wasn't in a rush to pick a fight with Seraphina.
She was still waiting.
Waiting for the perfect moment.
Just then, someone suddenly asked, "So, are you and Mr. Croix tying the knot soon, Ms. Vance?"
It was a question that demanded a direct answer.
Only then did Sebastian slowly lift his gaze.
Raelynn looked over as well, a trace of absurd mockery swimming in her eyes.
Catching Raelynn's stare, Sebastian's eyes locked onto her face for a split second.
Then, his gaze drifted to Matilda's face, seemingly sending a signal.
Matilda's expression grew somber; she suspected Sebastian was about to admit it outright.
Without giving him the chance to speak, she strode forward. "Thank you, everyone. Ms. Vance indeed has ties with our family, but one fact remains constant: she is a vital asset to Longstride and a talent that The Croix Group is focusing heavily on developing."
Sebastian raised an almost imperceptible brow, remaining silent.
Raelynn understood immediately. Matilda was acknowledging Seraphina's contributions, tying her to Longstride and the family professionally, while leaving the private matters entirely up to the imagination.
Not denying it was a form of silent consent.
Matilda was intent on capitalizing on every drop of profit Seraphina could bring in right now.
Seraphina understood it too, her smile growing even brighter.
She even cast a faintly arrogant glance in Raelynn's direction.
In that single look, Raelynn tasted the sheer arrogance of her provocation.
Her lips curled slightly, her tone perfectly even. "Is that so? Are those patents truly yours?"
Sebastian appeared thoroughly nonchalant. "If it's business, Mr. Moreno, feel free to speak your mind."
Then it would be done publicly.
Preston let out a mocking scoff and turned back to the woman of the hour. "Ms. Vance, care to explain why you plagiarized NexusMind's database, maliciously registered the patents under your name, and are now parading them around as your own? You stole Faye the Great's work and claimed her honors for yourself. What exactly do you take NexusMind for?"
Gasps echoed through the room.
Shock rippled through the crowd.
The guests were stunned by the sudden turn of events.
Even Matilda's face drained of color.
Raelynn knew Preston was stepping up to speak for her because he knew she couldn't expose her true identity yet.
She remained silent.
Preston pressed on. "Was this authorized by Longstride? Or by The Croix Group?"
He was dragging the situation to an entirely more severe level.
