The Croix family could scheme all they wanted.
They would never in a million years guess that the new owner of Longstride was actually Faye!
If letting Seraphina off the hook bought Raelynn the financial ammunition to fight them if Lily's existence was ever exposed, why on earth wouldn't she take the deal?
Raelynn easily grasped the brilliant logic behind the play.
She ignored the honey tea on the table, studying Sebastian's entirely unbothered expression. He acted as though handing over a publicly traded tech company was as trivial as giving away a used pen.
"You're incredibly generous, Mr. Croix," she said flatly.
"I take it you're satisfied with the terms?" Sebastian asked, the corner of his mouth ticking up slightly.
The terms—
Raelynn chewed on the word for a moment.
At the end of the day, all of this was just to clean up Seraphina's disastrous mess.
She wasn't an idealist. She wasn't going to reject millions of dollars just out of spite. Surviving in the real world was hard enough.
There was no point in throwing a fit over Seraphina or Sebastian and walking away with absolutely nothing. They were no longer a part of her future.
Pride couldn't pay the bills or buy groceries.
She could treat Longstride as her divorce settlement. Why shouldn't she take it? Everything would eventually go to Lily anyway.
"I'm sure the heavens are deeply moved by your unwavering devotion," Raelynn offered a razor-thin, fake smile.
Sebastian shot her an unreadable glance. "I appreciate the compliment."
Raelynn furrowed her brow.
He was always like this. Arguing with him was like punching a wall of cotton.
Preston knew the negotiations weren't over. He leaned in and murmured to Raelynn, "Strike while the iron's hot. We'll prep the evidence to have Seraphina's patent invalidated. For now, finalize the transfer of the company with him."
He was genuinely terrified that Sebastian or the Croix family would change their minds and take the offer off the table.
Honestly, if it hadn't been for this bizarre chain of events and the crisis tying Seraphina to the family name, the Croix family would never have given Raelynn a single dime. They were heartless.
As for the patent, they were furious about Seraphina's sheer audacity at first.
But even if she refused to admit it, Raelynn had plenty of ways to prove ownership. Seraphina would eventually have to spit out the stolen patent anyway.
"Fine. Whenever you're ready."
Sebastian turned back to Preston. "Mr. Moreno, I apologize for the spectacle tonight. I would appreciate it if you could speak with your father and let him know we are handling this privately."
Preston offered a thoroughly insincere smile. "No problem at all."
Since Raelynn had gotten such a massive payoff, they were more than happy to play nice.
Sebastian nodded, looking back at Raelynn. "Let's go home."
Raelynn felt entirely off-balance. The entire night had been unpredictable, but at least the final outcome was in her favor.
Preston waved her off, signaling that he had everything handled on his end.
For the first time in what felt like forever, Raelynn climbed into Sebastian's car.
She had zero intention of making small talk with him.
She kept her head down, staring intently at her phone.
She was scrolling through recent data reports on oncology surgeries. There were still countless medical barriers waiting to be broken, and it was the primary focus of her research. Ever since her mother fell ill when she was a child, she had developed a near-obsessive dedication to medicine.
