Whatever memory surfaced, it clearly wasn't a pleasant one.
Arthur's brow furrowed tightly.
A shadow of distress crossed his frail face.
Sebastian immediately stood up and lowered the bed. "It's alright, you don't need to think about it. Just get some rest."
Arthur was in his nineties, and his mind was often clouded. Sebastian wasn't going to force an answer out of him.
Once her grandfather closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Raelynn set down the strawberries she was holding.
"Step outside."
Sebastian grabbed his jacket and followed her into the corridor.
At this hour, the hallway was completely deserted, save for the occasional overnight nurse bustling by.
Raelynn walked all the way to the end of the hall before turning to face him.
Sebastian stopped, his dark eyes locked onto her, waiting for her to speak.
"What exactly are you trying to pull by coming here today?" Raelynn demanded bluntly.
She refused to believe Sebastian had suddenly been struck by a burst of filial piety and a guilty conscience.
After all, he didn't even care about her; why would he give a damn about her grandfather's well-being?
"Am I not allowed to visit your grandfather?" he countered.
"We're divorced. In what capacity are you visiting? As his former grandson-in-law?"
Sebastian looked at her, the corner of his mouth twitching slightly in an unreadable expression.
Knowing they were entirely incapable of having a civil conversation, Raelynn cut to the chase. "My origins and my family history are my own business. You have absolutely no right to interfere."
Though she could easily guess why he brought it up.
Making small talk with her grandfather meant he had to talk about her. But any other topic would have immediately led to the destruction of their marriage, his infidelity, and the sheer agony he had put her through.
By comparison, digging into the past was a much safer, more presentable conversation.
"You don't want to find your biological parents?" he asked.
"I'm perfectly happy with the life I have."
It was a deliberately impossible demand, a vicious and absolute refusal.
Sebastian understood her stance perfectly.
Or rather, he had known the answer from the very beginning.
Raelynn was fiercely independent, and she almost always responded better to a gentle approach than a forceful one.
But...
There was nothing gentle left between them anymore.
"So there's no room for discussion?"
Raelynn took a deep breath. The agonizing memories of Seraphina and Blanche's monstrous cruelty toward her and her mother violently surged to the surface. A sharp pain stabbed at her temples as the old, buried scars were ripped open all over again.
She practically spat every word. "I will never show mercy to the absolute scum who destroyed my family, treated me like garbage, and threw me into a rural wasteland to rot."
As she spoke of the deepest wounds of her past, her eyes grew rimmed with red.
It was the visceral, lingering trauma of a dark and torturous history.

No, no, no! Sebastian needs to nip the Zella situation and win Raelynn back! Also, Leo, he is a wildcard for Sebastian's master plan... Sebastian- we know you know, what we know, win your family back!...
I thought now Sebastian and Raelynn will be together now that seraphina is not but you are not letting them to be. Two new female around Sebastian 😭...
I think Ian is sly. He is not what he seems. Sebastian loves Raelyn and they have a daughter together. Besides he has no family to even take care of him. I feel Raelyn should realise that Sebastian is only her true love and go back to him....
