Perfect timing.
Someone approached to offer a toast, bowing slightly.
In that brief distraction...
The buzzing phone suddenly fell silent.
The screen slowly faded to black.
Sebastian Croix finally tore his gaze away from the darkened display.
He didn't call back.
-
Theon Talbot glanced at the outgoing call screen in Raelynn's hand before snatching the phone away and hitting end.
Raelynn felt like her bones had melted into lead.
She couldn't muster an ounce of strength.
With her medical background, she recognized the symptoms immediately. She had been drugged. She'd walked right into a trap.
A hand patted her shoulder. "Not feeling well? Let me take you somewhere to rest."
Raelynn watched helplessly as her phone was tucked away.
She was completely incapacitated.
Even her throat felt paralyzed, rendering her unable to scream.
Theon maintained his charming smile as he wrapped an arm around her and guided her toward the exit.
-
Julian stepped outside after enduring a few rounds of drinks.
He leaned against the staircase railing, frowning as he recalled the interaction between Raelynn and Theon.
Theon had been abroad for years, and Julian didn't know the details of his return. But a blind date right away? Aiming for marriage?
It didn't sit right with him.
Julian pulled out his phone and ordered a background check on the man.
He needed to know how the hell he ended up on a date with Raelynn.
It would take a while to get a response.
Resting his elbows on the railing, he pulled out a cigarette.
He sparked his lighter.
Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted two figures walking intimately close around the landing.
He froze.
Julian stood up straight, recognizing the silhouettes instantly. It was Raelynn and Theon.
To his utter shock, Raelynn's head was resting on Theon's shoulder, letting him hold her close.
The undeniable intimacy, that unspoken chemistry between adults, made a lump form in Julian's throat.
Whatever she did was her own business.
Maybe she and Theon had just clicked immediately.
But who was he to police her life?
If it weren't for Seraphina, he probably would have stormed over and ruined their little love-at-first-sight moment.
His eyes scanned the area one last time, but there was no sign of her.
Julian pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Alright, lean on me," he offered his arm, keeping a respectful distance.
Seraphina offered a gentle smile. "Thank you."
As they turned around.
Her gaze quickly darted toward the hallway where Raelynn had disappeared.
-
Julian escorted Seraphina back to the ballroom.
Inside the glamorous vanity fair, Sebastian sat at the center of attention. He looked indifferent and completely unfazed, exuding a cold, untouchable aura.
Seraphina took the seat next to him.
She then turned back to her escort. "Thanks again, Julian. I feel much better now. It barely hurts."
