Attending as Ian Hudson's date in front of all these people?
Half the room knew about her complicated history with the Croix family. She knew Sebastian was going to be here. Wasn't this a massive slap in the face?
Sebastian stared at the couple, his jaw tightening slightly before his expression smoothed over. "Whatever she does is none of my business."
His complete dismissal instantly relaxed Seraphina. She even managed a small smile.
Sebastian had practically written his indifference across his forehead. No matter how much of a scene Raelynn tried to cause, it was useless.
"But by doing this, isn't she publicly declaring that she's aligning with the Hudsons? What about her ties to the Croix family?" Leo asked, bewildered.
Was Raelynn out of her mind? Wasn't she terrified that burning this bridge would cause the Matriarch to destroy her career?
"Or maybe that's exactly what she wants," Seraphina chimed in, her tone dripping with quiet venom. "She's using this new academic title to make Seb jealous and force the Croix family's hand. But honestly, no matter how she got that professorship, if she can't produce real results over time, people will realize she's a fraud. Once that happens, no one will buy into her hype."
In other words, tonight might look like a triumph, with everyone clamoring to meet her, but the moment her lack of actual talent was exposed, her empire of sand would collapse.
"Regardless of her academic skills, the fact that Ian convinced his family to throw this banquet for her sends a very clear message," Julian interrupted, completely dismantling Seraphina's logic. "He fully intends to marry her."
Even if Raelynn's academic star faded, with the Hudson family's backing, she would remain untouchable.
Seraphina's face darkened. She hated how Julian always framed Raelynn as the ultimate victor.
The worst part was that Raelynn had already secured her next billionaire backer, while Seraphina was still struggling to solidify her place beside Sebastian.
"So tonight is basically her meeting the parents?" Leo asked. "She hasn't even finalized everything with Seb yet, right? Isn't she moving a bit fast?"
Leo turned to the silent man beside him. "Seb, you can't just let her make a mockery of things. Are you going to stop them from parading around like this?"
Sebastian shot him a cold, empty look.
