That singular sentence dragged the atmosphere straight into a powder keg.
Sebastian had a vicious tongue, but very few things could ever provoke him into showing true aggression. But right now...
"If it's compensation you want, Mr. Croix," Ian spoke up, "Lynnie and I will do our absolute best to give it to you."
As he spoke, Ian stepped right to Raelynn's side.
He reached out and gently took her wrist.
Though Raelynn felt a brief flash of awkwardness, she didn't let a single trace of it show.
She stood quietly beside him, offering no resistance.
The sight of them putting up a united front against him caused Sebastian's dark eyes to turn pitch-black. He stared at Ian's hand wrapped around Raelynn's wrist, his face a completely blank mask.
They looked just like a pair of tragic, star-crossed lovers.
It was laughable, really, as if they were begging him to let them finally be together.
The blazing sun overhead seemed to warp the very air, baking everyone beneath it.
Yet, the atmosphere felt as though it was pierced by freezing ice.
Sebastian's gaze finally shifted back to Raelynn's face.
The look in his eyes sent a violent shiver racing down her spine.
He wasn't actively raging. He wasn't yelling or cursing.
Raelynn couldn't even begin to decipher what was running through his mind, nor could she guess how he felt about Ian's cruel, brutally naked 'truth' that had just shattered his suspicions about Lily being his daughter.
But in this moment.
She felt there was absolutely nothing wrong with this outcome.
They were divorced. It was time for them to live their separate lives.
It was best not to leave even a shred of lingering attachment.
She knew that by deciding to enter an arranged marriage with Ian, telling Sebastian the truth about Lily wouldn't have been entirely unmanageable. After all, the custody relinquishment agreement she had quietly drawn up—but never showed him—was already in effect.
But she...
She didn't want to leave him with even the slightest glimmer of hope.
She wanted absolutely zero entanglements with him moving forward.
Of course.
She was also hyper-aware that Sebastian would never be heartbroken over Ian's words. He didn't care about her in the slightest, so there was no way he could harbor any desperate feelings of loss.
