Her brows instantly knitted together.
Reacting on pure instinct, she shoved her elbow and free hand hard against his chest.
She forced him back a step.
Breaking his hold on her waist in the process.
"Don't touch me," she snapped. "You make my skin crawl."
It was a raw, unfiltered reaction.
She didn't even care about keeping up appearances.
Sebastian took a slight step back. At the word "crawl," a dark, unreadable emotion flickered in his pitch-black eyes. It was gone in an instant, replaced by cold indifference as he slowly adjusted his suit jacket.
"My mistake for interfering."
His tone was perfectly flat.
But his utter lack of reaction felt like a suffocating weight, leaving her with no sense of victory.
Lily stared up at the two of them, her big eyes darting back and forth in confusion.
Even she could tell the energy between her mother and this man was downright toxic.
"Sebastian, over here."
Seraphina had noticed the commotion and practically sprinted back over. Pushing past Raelynn, she latched onto Sebastian's arm, pressing herself against him.
Only then did she turn to acknowledge Raelynn, her voice dripping with icy condescension. "I'd appreciate it if you kept your boundaries from now on. Try to maintain an appropriate distance, and show a little respect for his relationship status."
Raelynn actually let out a dry laugh.
She saw exactly what Seraphina was doing.
This desperate attempt to claim territory was pathetic.
Her possessiveness was so suffocating she might as well have rented a billboard to announce they had slept together.
A mocking smirk touched Raelynn's lips. "Then you better keep him on a tight leash. If he could cheat with you, he'll eventually cheat on you. If you don't start building up some tolerance now, the future is going to eat you alive."
With that final blow.
Raelynn grabbed Lily's hand and walked away without looking back.
Seraphina's face drained of color.
Raelynn felt perfectly comfortable letting Lily roam. The Yves family security was airtight. Given Dr. Hayes's status, the grounds were crawling with elite security detail, making it safer than a bank vault.
Once Lily was happily distracted.
Raelynn finally answered Sierra's question. "You think he's being lenient with me?" She shook her head with a cynical laugh. "No. That's just who he is. He refuses to waste a single ounce of energy on someone he doesn't care about. Getting angry with me serves no purpose. De-escalating the situation gives him a better return on investment. He's just relentlessly calculating and cold-blooded."
Sierra stared at her, wide-eyed.
Then, she asked softly, "Professor, how can you be so sure?"
Raelynn's voice was hollow, stating a simple, indisputable fact. "Because he never loved me."
Sierra cringed awkwardly.
Across the lawn.
A parade of distinguished guests lined up to shake Sebastian's hand.
When there was finally a lull.
Seraphina glanced up at him, a flush of manufactured shyness coloring her cheeks. "Last night... we definitely had a little too much to drink, didn't we?"

I think for as slow as the beginning was, their turning point is just so fast... really hope we actually get to read about R and S and their rekindle.... we did not read 950 pages for their story to be sidelined. Im for this sideline story, but it if it's to separate from the main characters and their story, please make it separate book....
Author please update more chapters...
I really like Zella, she is becoming a good friend to Raelynn. Ian needs to go. The relationship with Chloe is confusing. Some chapters they are cousins, sometimes they're sibling. A little confusing....
Julians role as big brother- I feel comes from a genuine place, but in a relationship thats is just as stained as Raelynns and Sebastians. It hard for me to connect to his big brother role as he too was such a problem before. And while they talked a little bit, the conversation did not give me the believe there was resolution between Raelynn and Julian. For a brute, he should make his feelings clear about the situation to Raelynn and then step back, until there is more foundation for him to stand on....
Knife in my heart. I hurt for Raelynn. She has made it this far, but how much does she have in her, everyone has a breaking point. Some back of me hopes the author is joking to lighten the mood after so many intense chapters, but thats not this kind of story or couple....
My heart cannot take this. This, cannot be how it ends with these too. They need resolution with each other. Raelynn needs to be more humanize with Sebastian. We know she is hurt, but this is the branch. She needs all these answers, if not for them to be together, then for Lily to have both her parents. Stop with the mind games Raelynn!...
Its like the story is just repeating itself...
Timeline is getting lost for me. So many treasured little memories Raelynn has but yet, he was gone for years ? Anyways... still rooting for them! These two need a heart to heart. Lily "forgetting" someone, not possible in this day and age and I hope thats not their storyline....
Sebastian, the man of few words.... needs to find all the words! Needs to fight for her! On note, seven years seems like a long time for this master plan (which I am sure goes back much farther). Rereading this novel, and it seems like everything has played out in a 5-8 month time span. And I feel like all Sebastian's doings/ plan have not been revealed. I hope we get to see the whole picture and have the resolutions we hope. But seven years of mistreatment, I just don't see Raelynn fully coming back. If these was 2-3 years, maybe, and I know it changes some characters around, but it would still work. Rooting for them!...
