Bound by the Past, Locked by the Heart novel Chapter 133

When Willa finally regained her senses, she was sitting on that familiar sofa.

The living room looked exactly the same; even her favorite throw pillow was in its usual spot.

Randal stood nearby on the phone, his voice sounding hollow.

"Yeah, I found her... It's fine, just superficial injuries... Come over tomorrow... Alright, bye."

He pocketed his phone and turned around.

Willa looked up at him.

They hadn't seen each other in half a month, and he had lost a shocking amount of weight. His cheekbones protruded, his eyes were sunken, and a shadow of dark stubble covered his jaw.

Heavy, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes, as if he hadn't had a proper night's sleep in weeks.

He just stood there, staring at her unblinkingly in complete silence.

The air in the room felt suffocating.

Finally, Willa was the first to break the silence. "I heard you were hospitalized... Are you better now?"

Randal's expression softened slightly, though his tone remained cold. "I'm fine."

They plunged back into silence, looking at each other without a word to say.

Seeing him this time, Willa couldn't shake the feeling that they had regressed right back to square one.

She had thought that, at the very least, they could peacefully coexist as ordinary friends.

She didn't blame him for getting engaged, and he shouldn't resent her for wanting to start a new life.

Just as she was preparing to sit down and have a rational conversation with him, the doorbell rang.

He answered the door and led in a fifty-something man carrying a medical kit—clearly the Yates family's private doctor.

The doctor walked up to Willa, carefully examining the swelling on her face before checking her arms and knees.

"The facial swelling isn't serious; ice it for a few days and it'll go down. The arms and knees are just scraped. Nothing major."

As he cleaned her wounds, he advised, "Get plenty of rest over the next few days. Keep the scrapes dry, and use some ointment if you're worried about scarring."

Willa nodded and thanked him.
