He took a few steps forward, leaning in close. "Wills, you're leaving?"
Willa instinctively backed away, her voice trembling. "Randal, move."
Randal tilted his head, looking at her as if he couldn't comprehend why she was acting this way. The smile on his lips only grew more twisted.
Willa took a deep breath, trying desperately to steady her voice. "Randal, I'm exhausted. We can't keep doing this."
"We shouldn't keep doing this?" He nodded slowly. "You're right. We shouldn't."
The smile on his face deepened, but she could clearly sense the agonizing pain suppressed deep within his soul, as if something inside him was on the verge of shattering completely.
And in the very next second, that fragile string snapped.
His smile froze, and the last flicker of light in his eyes extinguished entirely.
Willa's heart seized. A suffocating wave of danger hit her, sending a chill racing down her spine.
She stumbled backward until she hit the wall, cornered with nowhere left to run.
He advanced on her, slamming one hand against the wall right beside her ear, trapping her in his space. His entire posture resembled a predatory beast cornering its prey.
He leaned his face in, inch by inch, until his nose was practically brushing hers.
"Willa, I should have just locked you up. I should have made it so you could never take a single step out of this room."
Willa's pupils shrank in terror. "Randal, are you out of your mind?"
"Yes. I'm crazy." He admitted it without a shred of hesitation. "Didn't the doctor tell you? You were right before. I'm a psycho."
He lightly traced her cheek with his fingertips, his touch so gentle it was downright terrifying. "Wills, are you scared of me?"
Willa shook her head, but the uncontrollable trembling of her body had already betrayed her fear.
Randal simply nodded, as if he had expected this all along. "You should be. I'm scared of myself, too."
His thumb continued to stroke her cheek, his voice dropping to an icy murmur. "Do you know what I'm thinking right now?"
"I'm wondering where I should lock you up so you can't run away."
